The Marion Volunteer Infantry was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union army during the American Civil War. It was organized on September 3, 1861, at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The regiment was mustered into service on October 1, 1861. The regiment participated in the Battle of Ball's Bluff on October 13, 1861. On November 15, 1861, it fought in the Battle of Fort Harrison and then surrendered to Confederate forces December 16th.

Marion, Indiana is a small town located in Clearfield County,Indiana. The population was 793 at the 2000 census. Marion has a rich history dating back to 1822 when it was founded as a post office by James K. Butler and his wife Jane. In 1827, the town became part of Fayette County and remained that way until it became part of Clearfield County in 1881. The first settlers were people from Kentucky who arrived in the early 1800s looking for land to settle. They were quickly followed by other farmers and miners who began to arrive in large numbers during the 1850s. By 1870, Marion had a population of over 1000 residents with thirty-four businesses operating on Main Street. A significant increase in business occurred during the American Civil War as many soldiers came through town looking for food and shelter. After the war, business slowed down but resumed later in the century due to growing industrialization within Clearfield County which led to new jobs and housing developments throughout Mariontown center including downtown,the high school campus,and numerous smaller businesses along Main Street which have continued up through present day
Marion was founded in 1810 by the Indiana Company. The company surveyed and named the area that became Marion after General James Wilkinson, who helped lead the company in its first exploration of Indiana Territory. In 1816, Wilkinson donated land to the state of Indiana for a college and town were planned to be built on it. The town was eventually called Indianapolis and is now part of central Indy.
