Coffee has been brewed in Madison, Indiana since the early 1800s. The first coffee house in town was opened by Captain John Gregg in 1814. In the 1840s, local farmers began to grow coffee beans and sell them to locals and out of town merchants. By 1850, a small grocery store was open in town and became the first to offer coffee. In 1853, a bakery chain called the Dutch Bros. started selling coffee from their bakery on State Street. By 1860, a drugstore had opened in town and offered coffee as well as other goods. The first Starbucksopened its doors on North College Avenue in 2002. Since then, Madison has become one of the leading cities for home-brewed coffee.

On December 7th 1906 against Michigan State Spartans (then called State Normal School), local high school player John Waddell scored one of history’s earliest touchdowns – what could have been just another game played by all those children from central Illinois? No...the score wasn’t reported at the time but this hardwood image would forever commemorate one event - that day a group of boys from rural Dodge City formed themselves into their very own “Purdue Tigers” team playing under some extraordinary circumstances against one of America’s top collegiate programs! They did it without any playbooks or coaching…just Waddell running around like Crazy Joe Frazier doing his thing! How amazing must have been for these young men & their families when they finally got to Memorial Stadium to see their heroes take on such big names as Heisman trophy Winner Frank Gifford (later famous as coach at USC) & future NFL stars end up winning 40+ games each year?! What an incredible accomplishment that must have felt!!
