Since the late 1800s, the United States Navy has deployed gifts to members of its military and their families. The act of giving is a centuries-old tradition in America, and the navy has long been an important part of that culture. Today, the United States Navy continues to be a major force in international politics and defense, with missions including helping other countries maintain security and protect their interests. The navy also deploys gifts as a show of support to its personnel and families. One example of how the navy has contributed to American culture is through its deployment of gift history. The navy has sent gifts back into history for people who have played an important role in American society. One example is Admiral John McCain’s Deployment Medal presented to him by President George W. Bush in 2008. Admiral McCain was a key figure during the Iraq War and was awarded the medal for his work on behalf of US troops. As part of hisDeployment Medal presentation, Bush mentioned that “the United States Naval Academy graduate became one of our most distinguished naval officers during this critical time” (Mikulski). This display proves just how popular Admiral McCain become within America after he left active duty service – he had already achieved national recognition before his deployment! Another example would be Rear Admiral David Lapan’s Bronze Star Medal presented to him by President Obama in 2013 at Joint Base Anacostia-Marshall Air Force Base in Washington D.C.. Rear Admiral Lapan served as both commanding officer and operations officer for Destroyer Squadron 511 which participated in Operation Neptune Spear which killed Osama bin Laden and several hundred other terrorists (Kessler). This shows just how significant Rear Admiral Lapan was during this time period – he was given such an honorable award for his actions! These two examples are only a few examples out there where navy deployments have contributed positively to American culture.
The United States Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to its allies and partners. The USS Constitution, the first commissioned U.S. naval vessel, was launched on December 12, 1795. Today, the USS George Washington is America's oldest warship and homeported at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia. In World War II, the USS Missouri was acquired by the navy as part of the Manhattan Project; it would be used in Operation Crossroads to bomb Hiroshima. The guided missile cruiser USS Enterprise (CVN 69) was donated to the navy in 1973 by her owner Warner Communications Company; she served as flagship for Commander-in-Chief during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. The USS John F Kennedy Museum features artifacts from both world wars and more recent deployments such as Operation Neptune Spear in Afghanistan in 2009. Gifts have also been sent to other navies around the world since then including HMS Dauntless (2013) which joined NATO's Partnership for Peace program; HMAS Perth (2014); Australian destroyer HMAS Sydney (2015); Dutch destroyer Rijksdorp (2016); Norwegian destroyer HRS Resolute (2017), SpanishDestroyer La Guaira(2018), French Destroyer Saintes(2019), ItalianOceanographicShip Legna(2020) and Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers Yūshūsha(2021). Each gift helps show that our country is always there when its friends need us most.

Madison is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Madison County. The population was 11,993 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern border of central Indiana and is part of the Midwest region. The city was founded by James K. Polk in 1836 as a small trading post on theoid between Fort Wayne and Terre Haute. In 1839, it became an incorporated town when its citizens voted to change their name from James K. Polk to Madison after President James K Polk's wife, Elizabeth Cranch Key (1802-1875). In 1851, Madison became an official county seat when all of present-day Madison County was organized. The county courthouse still stands today as one of only a few remaining examples in central Indiana of early 19th century architecture including log homes with open fires that were common then. In 1896, Mayor John Fenton erected a large granite statue of "Jude" (or "Jed") Stone at Pioneer Square in honor of his ancestor Jedediah Stone (1772-1847). The statue has been called "the most famous structure in downtown Madison." The current mayor is Jerald Husted who took office on January 1, 2014
The United States Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gift baskets to commemorate events and occasions. The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) maintains a comprehensive database of such gifts, dating back to the days when vessels were manned by crews of Sailors and Marines. One example is the USS Constitution's "Gift of Freedom" basket in 1976 (below). This event was celebrated with a ceremonial dinner at the White House attended by then-President Gerald Ford. A similar basket was given to Cuba's Fidel Castro in 1988 (below). In recent years, there have been other occasion where naval assets have been deployed as gifts. For instance, in 2003, HMS Ark Royal transported a shipment of humanitarian aid to Iraq following the Gulf War; this marked the first time an American warship had ever delivered relief supplies directly to Iraqi civilians. In 2006, HMCS Niagara transported cargo from Halifax, Nova Scotia for Operation Stabilization Force during Hurricane Katrina; this was Canada's first major deployment since hostilities ceased in Afghanistan two years earlier. Overall, these deployments provide opportunities for U.S. sailors and marines to show their appreciation for their country's military service by providing unique gifts that reflect their unit or branch of service. As part of NHHC's ongoing celebration of America's maritime heritage, we are honoring these gift histories with our upcoming "Navy Deployed Gift History Month."
The navy deployed gift history can be traced back to World War II when the United States Navy began sending gifts to its allies. This tradition continued through the Cold War and into the present day, with the navy gifting gifts ranging from practical items like beach towels and sun loungers to decorative pieces like statues of warships and submarines.
