After 1840,Madison declined gradually until it was abandoned by most residents in 1892 when Interstate 94 passed through central Indiana making it more accessible from outlying areas. Today only a few remnant businesses remain within downtown Madison including two restaurants (Ziggy's BBQ & Pie Palace), one clothing store (Lakota), two florists (Fiesta Bloomers & Sweetbay Florists), one post office (the original building which still stands today), and a few scattered houses which have been preserved for their historical significance or are used for housing purposes by local residents. The first settler in present-day Madison was Isaac Cole who arrived there on July 3rd, 1785 while exploring what is now Illinois Territory looking for land to purchase from the French colonists who had recently arrive there. He named his new village after George Washington because he felt that he had become "a delegate from this great nation" through his exploration of Illinois Territory thus fulfilling Washington's prophecy that "a great people will come forth from this place" given his location on White River Road between La Porte County on the west bank of White River and Cadillac County on either side of Big Rapids Creek - both villages were founded near where I-94 now runs across central Indiana - these predictions would come true within 25 years each time! 1
