There has been coffee brewing in Madison, Indiana for over a century. The first written record of coffee being brewed in the town dates back to 1807. This was when the land that is now Madison was part of what was then called French County. In 1834, a man by the name of James Witherspoon started brewing coffee on a small farm west of Madison. By 1840, Witherspoon had built a large brick and metal house near the intersection of State Street and Mineral Avenue. This house became known as the Witherspoon House Coffee House and remained in business until 1907. The first production café in Madison opened its doors on November 12, 1912, at 114th and Keystone Streets. The Café de Paris operated from 1912-1914 at this location before moving to 111th and Keystone Street where it remains today as one of downtownMadison's most popular tourist attractions. The popularity of café de Paris led to other businesses starting up aroundMadison such as Cafe du Monde which opened its doors on December 6, 1916 at 121st and Keystone Streets; Amsterdam Coffee Shop which opened its doors on January 10, 1918 at 123rd and Monroe; Dutch Bros., Incorporated (later Eppley's Cafeteria) which opened its doors on February 15th, 1919 at 117th and Keystone streets; Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Brewers played their first game in Madison against the Louisville Colonels on April 8th 1901 at Rogers Park with attendance totaling 25,000 spectators! In 1927-1928 two new cafés were added to downtownMadison - Caffé Lark (at 119thand Maple) and Swiss Chalet (at 122ndand Walnut). These cafés were later replaced by Maxwell's Cafeteria which reopened its doors on October 3rd 1978 after much remodeling costing $2 million dollars! Maxwell’s Cafeteria is still open today serving delicious coffee with excellent pastries including doughnuts! During World War II many residents of Madison decided they did not feel like taking time out from their busy lives to go into military service so they switched to producing electricity instead utilizing their home brewery operation generating power for their homes while providing jobs for local citizens. On September 9th 1944 a new plant was built northwest of town producing ground beans for both United States Military forces overseas as well as civilian customers within our community who preferred less processed foods during wartime because there was no food available domestically that could compete with German quality products clandestinely smuggled into our country courtesy of Axis spies!!! After years OF research by an expert team consisting primarily/primarilyof Americans I certify that this high quality product is truly something special... pure Wisconsin black bean espresso!!!

Madison, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Wayne County, Indiana. The population was 793 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Madison was platted in 1836 as part of the Fort Wayne Territory by territorial president George Rogers Clark. It became a town in 1848 and a village in 1864. The current site of Madison was laid out as part of the Milwaukee Township merges into Wayne County on February 14, 1896. The first settlers to what is now Madison were Methodist ministers who arrived there from Green Bay in 1837 looking for land to build their church on. They named their new community after James K. Polk, then United States Vice President under Andrew Johnson, who had just been elected President that year. This naming may have been done because when General Harrison's army invaded Wisconsin during the American Civil War, they stopped at what is today downtown Madison and took possession of all supplies and equipment needed by the Union forces until Illinoisans could be mobilized to help them put down this rebellion.
