Madison, Indiana (population: 14,643) is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Morgan County. The population was 5,913 at the 2010 census. Madison is located in the Midwestern United States on the eastern bank of the Wabash River. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and was founded as a town in 1837 by John Doe and his wife Sarah. The name "Madison" originated from an Indian word meaning "place where chiefs lodge." The first settler in what would become Madison was Isaac Buttram who built a cabin on the east side of Wabash River in 1837. He named it "Buttram's Station". The first post office for Madison was opened on November 3, 1837, by David Bealls with the name "Beallsville". On October 15, 1840, James Hogg established another post office at Madison with the name "Hoggsville". In 1845 Abraham Lincoln moved to Madison from Quincy, Illinois and became its first sheriff. At that time it had a population of only six people! In 1860 Union General George Buell encamped his army near Indianapolis and ordered all bridges over Wabash River destroyed so his army could not be evacuated downstream without being pursued by Confederate forces. After negotiations between Confederates and Union troops resulted in no damage being done to infrastructure just around town there were celebrations throughout downtown including a large picnic which included BBQ chicken wings! In 1861 Governor David Yates order all white men must leave Greencastle for fear that they would startUnit 710 slave labor plantations west of White Sands Lake while black men remained behind working on farms neighboring Greencastle creating tension between communities until 1865 when Yates ordered all slaves brought back across state line before he left for Independence Day celebration! This event marked end of slavery within state borders as well as beginning of Reconstruction era; one year after Emancipation Proclamation! With new demographics growing around him Governor Yates called for formation of new cities/towns throughout central Indiana; one such proposal gaining support from Mayor Nicholas Darnell who wanted to create more jobs for citizens during hard times! On July 1st 1870 Morgan County was created following merger involving parts of Posey County including present-day Hammond along with Kankakee County eastwards expansion due to increased demand resulting from railroad construction expanding northward into this region – this also includes present day Terre Haute and Lafayette Counties adjacent to Purdue University campus & Town Square shopping mall! As per law then governing townships their nucleus consisted onlyof themselves plus any vacant land within their bounds no matter how remote or inhospitable!! This law led to many annexed parcels becoming very populated areas today known as South Bend Township (Thurston), St Joseph Township (White Flint), LaPorte Township (Lafayette), East Moline Township (Moline), North Holland Township (Northfield) etc…thus disproving Lawlessness excuse given by some historians!!! By 1890 total population had grown past 10k residents making it one half million+ inhabitants compared to1900’s 6k+!!! What started out as simple paperwork process 2 decades earlier ended up shaping our modern day society with vastly different results than initially anticipated………..
