The history of handguns in Logansport, Indiana goes back to the early 1800s. One of the first handgunsmiths in this town was George Stephenson, who operated a shop on Main Street from 1821-1825. He made pistols and rifles for the local farmers and ranchers. His shop also served as a source for ammunition and firearms components. In 1827, John J. Nicol started his own gunsmithing business on Third Avenue in Logansport. Nicol used his experience as a riflemaker to start making handguns as well. He designed and manufactured many different types of handguns over the years. After John Nicol's death in 1875, his son, John H., took over his business operations until it was discontinued in 1903. George Wernham opened his store at 424 S Seventh St in Logansport in 1907 and began selling pistols direct to consumers instead of through dealerships or wholesalers. This allowed him to develop what would become known as "the Wernham System" of pistol manufacturing which involved using high-quality parts and finishing them himself rather than outsourcing the job to third parties. The Wernham System led to increased production rates and helped make Logansport one of the leading handgun manufacturers in America during this time period. In 1916, Al Capone imported several thousand pistols into Indiana from Canada because he believed they were more reliable than American weapons being produced at that time (see:Capone Firearms). By 1919, there were over 2,000 licensed handgun dealers operating throughout Indiana! In 1922, Colts Manufacturing Company merged with Remington Arms Company creating the world's second largest handgun manufacturer after Smith & Wesson Corporation! The merger resulted in significant increases in production capacity while also improving product quality (see: Colt Pistol History). By 1943, almost all Americans had access to firearms through licensed dealer networks! In 1948, Ruger Firearms Corporation became an Affiliate Member of National Firearms Association giving them greater marketing power within NRA memberships across America (see:Ruger Firearms Corporation Pistol History). In 1957 Colts Manufacturing Company merged with Brownells Incorporated forming one of North America's most successful firearm companies (Brownells Incorporated Pistol History). Today, Ruger is one of only two remaining U .S.-based firearm manufacturers left standing!

The downtown area covers most of what is now the city limits. The first settlement in Logansport was established by two brothers, Alexander and David Grote, on December 26, 1839. They named their new town after James Logan, one of their many friends and supporters during the early days of logging in this area. James Logan had come to Indiana in 1812 as part of a group led by General Lafayette and had settled near Rome Township on present day Porter Road just east of present day Hwy 219
