Logansport is a city in Logansport County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logansport County. Logansport was founded in 1814 by James Ladd and named for John Logan, an early settler. The first post office in Logansport opened in 1830. In 1836, the city became a state capital when Indiana seceded from the United States and became a state of its own. In 1840, loggers discovered coal deposits in what is now Logansport and began to extract coal for export. By 1860, about 60% of the town's population were employed in mining or related trades. In 1865–1866, Elijah McCoy built a grain elevator which allowed logging companies to ship large quantities of wheat across the river into Illinois for refining into flour. By 1870, more than half of all maize exported from Indiana went through Logansportsportation; by 1900 it had become one of the largest corn exporters in America.[1] The Railroadtown Historic District encompasses most of downtown Logansport between 9th and 11th Streets on Main Street between State Road 506 (now Ross Avenue) and State Road 605 (now Elm Street). The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984[2]. It includes buildings dating from 1814 to 1960 including two brick buildings that are separately NRHP-listed as both contributing properties to this complex: James Ladd House (c1814), also NRHP-listed as part of First Presbyterian Church/First Methodist Episcopal Church Complex;[3] and George Wickersham House (1860), also NRHP-listed as part of Second Baptist Church/Second Methodist Episcopal Church Complex.[4]
