Walker changed the name of the business to Equal Exchange Coffee Company and continue growing it into one of the largest small batch coffee companies in the world. The first Equal Exchange Coffee company roastees were located in Beirut, Lebanon where they started out with twobean roasts and English Breakfast blends. Lebanon's first post office was established in 1878. In 1896, Lebanon became a village and was incorporated as a city in 1907. From 1960 to 1968 it was part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Lebanon, Indiana was founded in 1814 by a group of Mormons. The town name is derived from the biblical city of Beirut and its founders were inspired to establish their new settlement after escaping religious persecution in their home country of Lebanon. The small community quickly grew and soon had a population of around 100 residents. The early years of Lebanon,Indiana were difficult for the town as it struggled against competition from larger towns in central Indiana. In 1831, however, the town voted to annex part of neighboring Paintsville and began to prosper. By 1830, most residents had built homes and started businesses including a bank and an insurance company. The economy stabilized during the 1830s as more people migrated into Lebanon from rural areas in Illinois and other states throughout the Midwest. Lebanon experienced some prosperity during the 1840s but again struggled against competition from larger communities in central Indiana due to its small size and limited resources. Nevertheless, many residents remained responsible for their own well-being and contributed to the local economy through their businesses or services. By 1850, most residents had moved away or lost interest in living in Lebanon because they found better opportunities elsewhere within central Indiana. However, recent research has shown that not all Lebanese individuals left Lebanon after World War II; some remain very active members of their community today. This persistence demonstrates how intertwined Lebanese culture is with that of central Indiana – two communities that have shared much history together since before either community could even exist as separate entities
