Lebanon, Indiana is a town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Lebanon was platted in 1807 and named for Mount Lebanon in present-day Turkey. The original residents were mostly French Catholic immigrants who had come to what was then Northwest Indiana to work on the Erie Canal project. The first school was built in 1830 and operated under private auspices until 1847 when it became an public school with a mission to provide education for all children regardless of race or social background. In 1863, the United States government assumed control of the canal and began construction on the road connecting Indianapolis with Cincinnati; as a result of this new development, Lebanon came into existance as a town. Lebanon has experienced many changes over its history including being annexed by Indianapolis in 1902; becoming an independent city in 1924; being destroyed by fire in 1951; experiencing another round of annexation by Indianapolis in 1957 which made it a suburb of that city; finally becoming an incorporated town within LaPorte County on February 14th, 1959. Lebanon, Indiana is a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Jefferson City, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement began as a farm community called Lebanon in 1854 and was named for Lebanese refugees who had fled Ottoman Turkey during the First World War. In 1876, members of the Methodist Church founded Lebanon School and Garden which became one of the first schools in Harrison County. A post office was established at Lebanon in 1878 and remained in operation until it closed on December 11, 1971. In 1907, local resident John Witherspoon donated land to create a park that would remain today known as Witherspoon Park. The park now contains more than 60 acres (24 ha) of forested land with ponds and streams as well as several playgrounds and tennis courts. Lebanon-Marble Beach Bridge was built over Big Sandy Creek in 1922 by local farmer Leonard Hoyer to connect Marble Beach with Lebanon proper across Big Sandy Creek. The bridge remains today one of the most traveled routes between Marble Beach and Lebanon proper due to its easy access from UofI's campus area or via I-65 Exit 20A . The bridge also served as an important transportation artery for residents living near Big Sandy Creek before Interstate 65 came into being
Lebanon, Indiana history begins with the first settler in Lebanon, John Baptist Ziegler, who arrived in 1836. He and his wife were the first white people to live in what is now Lebanon. The Zieglers built a log cabin on a hilltop and named it "Zion". They raised four children there and started a small business. In 1840, they bought land from the Prophet Elijah Muhammad for $2 per acre. From this land, they began to grow crops and build homes. By 1845, they had purchased another piece of land and named it " Spring Grove ". They continued to grow crops and build homes until 1868 when they sold their farm to Jesse Barnes for $8 per acre. This was the beginning of Lebanon's growth as an agricultural community.
