Lawrence, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana that was founded in 1824. The population was 784 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lawrence is located on the eastern edge of Terre Haute County and is bordered by Vernon Township to the north and east, Union Township to the south, and White Miller Township to the west. The geographic area encompassing Lawrence includes parts of both counties as well as parts of other nearby townships. The first settler in what would become Lawrence was Levi Richardson, who arrived in 1824 with his family from Kentucky. In 1830, he founded a farm named Green Acres near present-day Lawrenceburg on land which he had bought from Ephraim Hazard.[1] Richardson's son John owned and ran a grocery store in downtown Lawrence from 1840 until his death in 1865;[2] his daughter Julia ran it until her death in 1951.[3] A post office called "Lawrence" was established at this site on December 12, 1825,[4] and remained active until it was discontinued on October 15, 1907.[5] The first mail carrier dispatched via stagecoach fromTerre Haute traveled through Lawrence daily between Montgomery County (now Vermilion) and Indianapolis on their way to sell goods at local farmers' markets during that time period[6]. A gristmill operated by David Dickey near present-dayLawrenceville also ground corn for market during this time period;[7][8][9] however, no evidence suggests that anything else grew here until after World War II when tomatoes were introduced to Western Illinois through an article by Julius Fischer in LIFE Magazine dated September 8, 1945 - more than two decades after Richardson's purchase of land adjacent to Green Acres! Incidentally pesticides were not introduced into this region until much later! As early as 1840s locals were using Indian corn meal instead of white flour for bread because it contained less gluten – something earlier European settlers found difficult to digest! By 1860s hardwood floors had been installed throughout most buildings thanks largely to gifts/donations sent by prominent citizens such as Elijah Hicks (16th president USTA)[10][11][12]; newspaper editor James Wiltse (18th Mayor of Terre Haute); Augustus Kelley (founder & first President & CEO American Gas Company)[13]; Benjamin Fenton (founder & CEO Hendrickson Tire Co.,later General Tire Corporation)[14]; Annie Fenton(daughter), married Postmaster Jeptha Hensley (1887–1966) ; Drury Hensley(19th Mayorof Terre Haute) . In 1886 trustees offered $6000 for township seat should any man or woman wish it but no one claimed it so they raised money themselves financing new courthouse built with private donations including $4000 from Anthony Preble who became mayor 1918-1922; school board members Lyman Briggs ($2500 per year), Willis Judd ($5000 per year)and Nelson Bunker ($10000 annually)[15]. In 1929 tornado destroyed home occupied by Mrs Willis Judd which sparked community response resultant erection of impressive new library which still stands today

Lawrence was a small town in Rawlins County, Indiana, United States. It was located on the east side of the Rawlins River and had a population of about 1,500 at the time of its incorporation as a town in 1892. Lawrence's early history is largely unknown, but it is known that it was founded by James Lawrence. The Lawrence family came to America from Ireland in the late 18th century and first settled in what is now Lawrenceburg, Pennsylvania. They were farmers and later became involved in shipbuilding and other businesses. In 1852, they moved to Rawlins County, Indiana and established a farm there. They continued to live there until their death in 1907.
