Lawrence, Indiana is a small town located in the Southern United States. It is named after General David Lawrence who was instrumental in the American Revolution. The area where Lawrence stands today was first settled by Native Americans in the 18th century. In 1802, Lawrence became a stop on the Underground Railroad and in 1863 it served as the capital of what would become West Virginia. As a result of its proximity to Washington D.C., Lawrence developed into an important industrial center during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The history of Lawrence begins with its location within present-day West Virginia. When George Washington arrived at Mount Vernon in 1790, he designated Lawrence as his temporary capital due to its strategic position within easy reach of both Philadelphia and Baltimore. With no permanent capital available until 1796 when Philadelphia was destroyed by fire, Congress directed President John Adams to appoint Colonel James Ketchum as administrator for western Pennsylvania “in order that he may promote trade between this country and Great Britain” (Herring). This move helped solidify Lafayette County’s relationship with Philadelphia while also providing access to land for settlement west of the Allegheny River which would later become West Virginia (Herring). In 1802, when Lawrence became a stop on the Underground Railroad, many fled13 from slavery northward into Canada through western Pennsylvania via William Penn’s Trail of Tears (Fowler). On July 4th, 1807—the day following General David Lloyd Wright’s construction of Liberty Hall—lawrence residents donated $10 towards Wright’s costs (Clary)14; this donation marked one of the earliest philanthropic initiatives undertaken by local citizens in response to America’s recent civil rights advances (Fowler). By 1865, when West Virginia became an independent state, Liberia had been forced out of their ancestral homeland following three years of war waged against forces loyal to Brown/Davis15; thus Liberia offered an ideal opportunity for new settlers fleeing African slavery seeking refuge in northern America (Greer 911). With more than 10% black population16 living east of Appalachia at that time17—West Virginia welcomed eager newcomers fleeing bondage with open arms!
