Lawrence, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Lawrence was founded in 1814 by Captain John Law as a small trading post on an emigrant boat named "The Ganges." Lawrence grew rapidly due to its location on the new Erie Canal and its status as a stop on stagecoach routes. In 1828, it became the capital of Putnam County after being incorporated as a town from portions of neighboring Kosciusko and Union counties. A courthouse and jail were built here in 1829. The town experienced rapid growth until 1830 when a fire destroyed most of their buildings including the courthouse and jail which remain standing today. In 1837, Lawrence became one of three towns in central Indiana to become attached to Indianapolis through annexation by that city. The other two towns were Decatur (now Terre Haute) and Goshen (now West Lafayette). At this time, it had a population of about 925 people; however, by 1840 it had grown to 1,000 people with over 160 businesses operating in downtown Lawrence alone! In 1840-41, both Lawrences sent delegates to Indianapolis for what would be their final meeting as joint citizens before they were annexed into Indianapolis together! During this period legal action against Indians was common due to land seizures by Indian agents during open warfare between Native Americans and white settlers throughout Central Indiana Territory; these raids often took place near present day Normal Township east of Lawrencetown along I-70/I-465 while traveling southbound on I-465 towards Fort Wayne or northbound onto I-70/I-465 towards Grand Rapids or Detroit Michigan! This situation led directly to tension between white settlers living within limits set for them by U.S./Indian treaties while also leading directly to many conflicts with local Native American groups that continued until well into the 20th century! In 1850s growing trade with Canada stimulated growth in Lawrence’s economy which helped contribute significantly to its becoming an established commercial center during this time period! By 1860 total production within downtown Lauraises exceeded $5 million annually earning it distinction as one of “the great industrial cities” across America at that time!!! With such success came prosperity for all involved; residents prospered economically while also enjoying high quality OFA air quality thanks largely to burning coal rather than woodchips used elsewhere in Europe!!! Additionally during this time frame there were numerous significant advancements made within municipal government affairs including: first electric streetlights being installed in downtown Lauraises in 1865!! These early examples are indicative not only of advances made at local level but statewide trends too which can be seen throughout much later history via innovations & improvements introduced at state levels!!!
