In 1794, Roque de la Vega brought coffee back to Spain with him when he sailed through the Isthmus of Panama on his way to Mexico City. From then until 1816, Coffee was traded between Europe and Asia Minor where it grew very popular.
In 1819, Nicholas-Jacques Conte imported 500 lbs of raw Arabica beans from Peñalosa de la Frontera (near modern day Bogotá) Colombia for French market research purposes only. This was the first time that coffee beans were exported commercially from Latin America.
