The Lawrence Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services on the western shore of Lake Michigan since 1907. The station’s history can be traced back to a small post office that served the community of Lawrence, Indiana, in 1871. The post office was moved to its current location on the east side of town in 1909. In 1913, the station became part of the United States Coast Guard when it was created as an organization under the National Defense Act. At that time, the coast guard consisted of just 6 officers and 100 enlisted men. In 1916, Congress changed the coast guard’s mission from law enforcement to disaster relief and shifted its emphasis from preventing coastal piracy to rescuing people stranded onshore during hurricanes or other natural disasters. In 1929, Navy Captain Isaac Nourse assumed control of the coast guard station after retiring from service at sea. Under Captain Nourse’s leadership, Lawrence became one of the most important Coast Guard stations along Michigan’s shoreline. From 1929 until his retirement in 1954, Captain Nourse was responsible for developing and maintaining both physical and electronic warning systems along Michigan’s southern shoreline. Captain Nourse is also remembered for building a new lighthouse at Belle Isle in 1965 which helped improve navigational accuracy along Michiganders coastline during severe weather events such as hurricanes or tornado outbreaks. In 1975, Captain John Moulton took over command ofthe station following Captain Nourse’s death – making him one of only two captains with command experience at both coasts simultaneously in U S Coast Guards history Moulton directed various programs designed to promote recreational activity on LRIS while continuing provide emergency services; he also developed LRIS into a valuable tourist attraction .During his tenure LCG established itself as one of Midwest's leading maritime law enforcement agencies by expanding patrols off state borders; participating in numerous international search-and-rescue operations; conducting joint exercises with Federal Law Enforcement Officials; directing annual Christmas Carol Service (1986) Following Moulton's retirement in 1992 LCG transitioned gradually into an all volunteer force operating through Advisory Committees composed primarilyof retired members serving terms ending December 31st each year

The Lawrence, Indiana coast guard gift history begins with a donation in 1921 from Mrs. Geo. H. Jenkins of Huntington Beach, California. The gift was made in memory of her husband and fellow Coast Guardman, Captain George Jenkins who had passed away in 1918. In 1951, the state of Indiana adopted the United States Coast Guard National Anthem as its official song and captain John Ahern became the first lieutenant governor of Indiana upon its creation in 1968. In 1984, Captain Tom Doherty became the first CG chaplain for the Indiana coast guard and continues to serve today. In 1990, Lieutenant Governor Rick Holcomb designated Mayday Memorial Park on the shore of Lake Michigan as the "Coral Gables" location forCG gifts and ceremonies to honor those who have served our country at sea or ashore during World War II/ Korean War/ Vietnam Era (1946-1975). Lawrence, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 5,749 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The name Lawrence comes from a Native American term meaning "place where the deer play." The town was founded in 1871 by General David Dixon and Reverend John Fenton. Many of the early settlers were also farmers. Lawrence became an important center for shipping goods between Evansville and Chicago during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Lawrence is known for its warm weather, which can be experienced all year long. The town has a wide range of businesses, including several banks and two malls. There are also several cultural attractions, such as the Lawrence Arts Center and Lawrence Memorial Park.
The Coast Guard is a branch of the United States government which protects both land and maritime interests on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf Coasts. The Coast Guard was formed August 29th, 1917 as the Merchant Marine Brigade of the Department of Commerce. On December 4th, 1934, it was renamed the Coast Guard Reserve. In 1943, it became an all-volunteer force under the command of Governors General in the United States Military Districts. In 1951, it was reorganized into three divisions (Life Guards; Naval Militia; and Civilian Patrol) with headquarters at New York City. The first Commandant was Rear Admiral John J. Walsh who served from 1951 to 1958. He had been Flag Officer Commanding Lifeguard Division 2 at Norfolk Virginia until he was appointed Deputy Commander for Lifeguards Operations with Headquarters at Miami Beach Florida on July 1st 1958 after being nominated by President Eisenhower to that position by then Secretary of War George C Marshall. On November 15th 1978 Vice Admiral Wallace N Hargrave assumed command as Commandant effective November 16th 1978 following Rear Admiral Wallace's retirement from active duty due to ill health At present Commodore William B Franks serves as Commandant with Headquarters located in Newport News Virginia In 1941 there were only two lifeboats available for use on American coasts while in 1945 there were over 100 lifeboats manned by coast guard personnel across America In 1967 coast guard personnel helped respond to Hurricane Betsy which destroyed a number of small boats along America's Eastern Seaboard In 1979 another hurricane hit America killing more than 30 people including 3 members of the Coast Guards Lifeboat detachment off Long Island In 1990 during Operation Desert Storm Coast Guard personnel responded Heroicly when a heavy Saudi bombardment destroyed one merchant boat just offshore from Kuwait causing many refugees to flee ashore On May 5 1999 USS Constitution (CGN-71) lost power due to engine failure while underway in international waters near Cuba and due to this caused her crew and passengers to abandon ship without any warning or opportunity for help or evacuation Coastal patrol vessels were called out but no loss occurred

Lawrence, Indiana is a small town located in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 8,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Van Buren, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by German immigrants who named it Larenburg after their birthplace in Lemberg, Austria. The name changed to Lawrence in 1849 and to its current spelling in 1907 when the community incorpored a post office. The first school in Lawrence was built on the site of today's high school (now known as South High School) around 1839-40. A log cabin served as the first building and it burned down in 1840 due to a fire that also destroyed most of Larenburg’s crops that year. Another school was built on Cemetery Road about 1860-65 by local farmers using land donated by John Davenport and others from nearby townships. After years of construction, this new school—known as North High School—was dedicated on October 24, 1907 following a dedication ball attended by many local dignitaries including Mayor J H Crocker and District Judge W S Painter Jr.. Lawrence experienced heavy fighting during World War II with various battles taking place here from December 1941 until May 1945 inclusive; these include: Battle of Fort Wayne–LaPorte County Line (December 8), Indianapolis –Indianapolis National Guard action at Stonington Avenue Bridge (January 3), Battle of Avondale Heights (February 14), Battle of Post River Valley (March 10), Battle of Mynyddfaerchogion (April 9). In total over 1,500 men were killed or wounded here while serving our country during World War II! Lawrence has several festivals throughout the year which are typically held near April Fool's Day or other spring related celebrations like Pioneer Days/Fairs/Festivals etcetera
Lawrence was founded in 1811 by James Lawrence. The town grew up around the Lawrence Canal, which connected Lake Michigan and the upper Ohio Valley. The canal helped to spur development in Lawrence, and it became a center for manufacturing and trade. In addition to its role in local economy, Lawrence also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s.
