The Lawrence Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by Harry and Mabel Morse. The company became a national chain in the early 1900s, and produced coffee for such organizations as the United States Military Academy, Ford Motor Company, and the University of Chicago. In 1956, the company merged with J.B. Lilliard & Sons to form the J.B. Lilliard Corporation. The Lawrence Coffee Corporation continued to produce coffee until it closed its doors in 1984.
Lawrence is a town in Tipton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,543 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Lawrence School District was founded in 1878 and operates nine schools: three elementary schools (Grades K-4), one middle school (4-8), one high school (9-12), and two professional schools (Doctoral/JD/MD): Lawrence College of Pharmacy & Science and Liberty University Law School. The district has an enrollment of over 17,000 students with emphasis on academic excellence. According to the website cbslocal.com, "Lawrence was established as a small log cabin settlement in what is now Tipton County by Colson Lewis on December 5, 1836." A post office called Lawrence was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1838, Isaac Granger moved his family from Decatur to Lawrence and began to build a log cabin known as "Granger's Cabin". He named it after his father-in-law who had died earlier that year. In 1840, he married Rachel Pugh and continued to live there with her and their children until he died in 1850. Her daughter Laura Witherspoon completed construction of the first schoolhouse which opened for instruction on March 2nd, 1847; Grangers Cabin became Lawrence public school #1.. In 1862 John Hinton built a sawmill on White Creek stream adjacent to present day Greenlawn Cemetery; this mill provided both economic development for the town as well as employment for many people including some local farmers who supplied flour for local stores while also manufacturing cannonballs from limestone quarried nearby.. In 1865 John Hinton's son George took over operations of the mill which continued until it closed down due to competition from new mills entrants into the area during that time period; however souvenirs can still be found at various locations around town today including at Greenlawn Cemetery where portions of an early 20th century gristmill remain.. On November 25th 1870 residents of Lawrence voted 3–0 against incorporation into any new county due to concerns about potential land purchases by neighboring Hamilton Township.; instead they formed their own township called Hamilton Township but changed their name back upon becoming an independent community on January 1st 1971 when all other townships within Tipton County were merged into Indianapolis proper.. After years of debate, approval finally came through by voters on May 12th 1984 when they passed a resolution setting forth plans for annexation by Indianapolis; this vote represented a major victory for city boosters who had long lobbied hard For such an annexation since it would have given much needed tax revenue to support infrastructure projects within the city limits while also increasing its overall population size making it easier accessable via Interstate 65 thereby stimulating growth along more important corridors downtown like Emerson Avenue). After annexing most or all neighboring townships within Tipton County – excluding Ligonier – Indianapolis grew rapidly becoming one of America’s most vibrant cities with aspirations reaching beyond its borders;; however over time violence has increasingly become endemic throughout much of central Indiana resulting in increased law enforcement efforts targeted towards stemming crime rates rather than addressing underlying social issues& although crime rates have decreased overall since 2000 hopes are still harbored that comprehensive change may eventually be required depending upon results achieved during 2016 mayoral election campaign
