The Lawrence, Indiana Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1867. The unit was first organized as the 3rd Regiment of Indiana Infantry and served in the Union army during the Civil War. After the war, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Regiment of Infantry in 1871. The 1st Regiment was mobilized for service during World War I and participated in maneuvers at Camp Logan in Illinois before being deployed to France. Following World War I, the regiment returned home and again mobilized for service during World War II. In 1951, the 1st Regiment became part ofthe 6th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) and served as a airborne reserve unit until its disbandment in 1984. Since its disbandment, however, the Lawrence Army National Guard has maintain a strong presence within its community by providing support to various local organizations. These organizations have included The United Way of Lawrence County; Kiwanis Club-Lawrence; American Legion; Indian Health Service-Lawrence; Boys & Girls Clubs-Lawrence; Little League Baseball/Softball Association-Lawrence; and Nazareth Baptist Church-Lawrence. Additionally, since 2007, members ofthe Lawrence Army National Guard have been donating their time to help restore several historical buildings within town square which are now used as summer camps for children from nearby towns.

Lawrence, Indiana is a town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Lawrence was founded on July 10, 1827 by Captain John Lawrence and his family of thirteen pioneers. The first store in Lawrence was built on the current site of the American Legion Post #2. The town name "Lawrence" originated from a spot where Captain Lawrence found a piece of land after he had lost his horse during a hunting trip to that area. The first post office in Lawrence opened in 1827. In 1835, the first school was established in the town and soon became one of the most popular educational institutions in Porter County due to its excellent teaching staff and well-maintained buildings. A brick mill was built near present day downtown Lawrence in 1852 and quickly became one of the largest employers in town with over 100 workers until it closed its doors for good in 1902. From then until 1978 when it merged with nearby Merrillville to form Merrillville-Lawrence Township, all activity within city limits ceased as there were no plans to expand into unincorporated areas beyond what existed within municipal boundaries In 1978, two new municipalities were created as part of a larger consolidation plan which included all but four Porter County townships including Lawrence proper Merrillville-Lawrence Township continued operations as an independently functioning township until 2002 when it merged with neighboring Merrillville-Lafayette Township to form Lafayette Township The following year saw another merger which again created three new municipalities: Muncie-Lafayette (formerly known as Terre Haute), Indianapolis ( formerly known as Carmel) and Fort Wayne (formerly known as Noblesburg) This continues to be an everchanging landscape with multiple mergers taking place throughout Butler County each year
