By 1870, it had become an agricultural community with about seventy-five residents. The first school was built in 1872 and the first store opened in 1875. In 1907, the name of the community was changed to honor President James K. Polk after he toured the area while campaigning for reelection to his second term as president. In 1930, a dam was built across Big Branch River to replace an earlier stream-control structure that had been destroyed by flooding during a severe winter storm. The townspeople raised money for its construction and dedicated it on October 15th of that year. At that time, Lake Station had a population of 1,500 people and consisted of just three buildings: a church (1892), a school (1872), and an old cotton gin (1907). By 1950, however, Lake Station had blossomed into an thriving community with over 4,000 residents who enjoyed fishing, boating, swimming and other recreational activities along Big Branch River. During 2002-2004 there were several devastating wildfires which burned through much of central Indiana leaving homes burning down and businesses left homeless; this led to increased concerns about potential loss or destruction from future fires in this rural area; fortunately no damage occurred as result but public education campaigns were started which led to more people being aware of fire danger symptoms such as staying inside when fires are present

On December 3, 1907, the post office discontinued operations and became a grain terminal. It reopened on October 14, 1912 as an agricultural research station. The station closed again on May 6, 1951 when it merged with nearby Ft Wayne to form the current site of Fort Wayne Airport.
