At that time, the town was located on the north side of the Chicago River and its merchantsShipping company, The Illinois Navigation Company had a pier on the river. It was here that they shipped goods from Illinois to Michigan. One of their products was salt water tins. In 1893, the company built a dock on the south side of the river and began shipping products to markets in both Midwest and Florida. By 1916, The Illinois Navigation Company had merged with American Can Line and became American Can Shipbuilding Corporation. That year also saw the construction of a new pier on the river by American Can Shipbuilding Corporation which would become known as The Illinois Bridge Pier.
Lake Station is a small town in Monroe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Lake Station was established on December 7, 1857. It closed on November 30, 1907. The first settler in what is now Lake Station was John Witherspoon. He and his family arrived from Illinois on September 26, 1836 and built their log cabin near present-day Center Grove Road. William Fenton followed soon after and built a cabin east of the village across from the current high school building (now an animal shelter). In 1858, Liddell & Salisbury founded a mercantile business at present-day Indian Creek Avenue and Main Street. In 1861, Rev. Jno Atherton organized the Methodist Episcopal Church at this location which he served as pastor until 1865 when he became rector of nearby Sheffieldsville church. In 1865 also came George Hargrave with his wagon train to settle in what would become Lake Station; he had been driving cattle north from Martinsburg through Central Indiana to be sold here for meat by Olney Brothers overland mail route then being constructed southward from Indianapolis via Decatur Junction before it became available for settlement west of that junction near Clearwater Creek.. The population of Lake Station began to grow steadily during the late 1800s with agriculture becoming increasingly important as more settlers reached the area; many were farmers who used land they acquired northwest of town along Clearwater Creek for growing corn, beans and other crops while others developed dairy farms or leased land northeast of town for raising horses and cows. By 1900 there were 424 residents living in or adjacent to Lake Station; by 1910 that number had increased to 1,851 residents including 910 farmsteads comprising some 91% of all village acreage! And yet another major reason why growth continued throughout this time period was because new transportation options – both railroads (the Indianapolis & Michigan Railway Company) and automobiles – made access to these areas much easier than it had been a few years earlier! The opening up of central Indiana following World War I led directly to increased industry within Lake Station as businesses clamored for space in factories scattered around central Indiana; this included several large breweries such as Pabst Brewery (founded 1921), Anheuser Busch Brewery (1927), Schlitz Brewing Company (1929), Schlumberger Corporation headquartered at its original site southeast of town off Highway 131 just east of Old Mill Road beginning about 1920 via annexation by nearby Decatur Township which became known variously as “Lake station” or simply “Decatur” – helped contribute significantly to another era Of Rapid Growth within our community….. Today's economy is based largely upon services: tourism (including conventions/ Visitors Bureau events), education/research institutions (+ two medical schools + one dental school) ect., light manufacturing (+ three companies doing aluminum production + one car dealership) ect……… although agricultural still plays an important role Some 25%of Village Population derives income form services….
