The first community on the site of present-day Lake Station were two Logansport families who built a log cabin in 1851. The first post office was established at this location in 1853, and remained in operation until it closed in 1909. In 1870, George Washington Hughes built a grist mill on the north side of the creek that flows through town. The mill produced flour for local markets and shipped to Indianapolis and other cities across Indiana. In 1892, James Waugh bought land near present-day Lake Station and began construction of what would become Waugh's Store & Mill which became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1907, he built another store - this time called Waugh's Drug Store - which remains an important landmark today. Waugh also developed some residential properties in town which still stand today including: Hughes House (now a museum), Waugh's Court House (now a restaurant), Walsh House (now an apartment complex), and Hogan Place (now a park). All these structures are registered with Historic America as well as being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1932, A&P supermarket opened its doors to business at what is now Park Plaza Shopping Center adjacent to downtown Lake Station. That same year saw the opening of First National Bank by J P Morgan & Co., which remain long standing anchors for downtown shopping areas throughout central Indiana! A variety of retail stores have since opened along Main Street including Sears, JCPenney, Kmart and Macy's; making Lake Station one of centralIndiana’s largest commercial districts!
Lake Station was founded in 1814 by the DeKalb County Indiana Land Company. The company acquired a tract of land in what is now southeastern Indiana from the Shawnee and Potawatomi nations. The town was founded on the site of a small trading post which had been established by the company's founders, fur traders George Rogers Clark and James K. Polk, in 1811. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1835, Lake Station became one of the first towns in Indiana to be incorporated as a city. It experienced rapid growth during the 19th century, developing into an important center for agricultural production and commerce. In 1861, Lake Station was renamed Indianapolis after General Ulysses S. Grant during his visit to that state; Grant had earlier visited nearby Posey County before arriving at Indianapolis with his army for its trip to West Virginia During his stay in Indianapolis, he also visited Lake Station and dedicated a park there named for him. In 1926, Lake Station was annexed by neighboringIndianapolis; this annexation relieved much of the economic pressure on its original community and left it more isolated than before. However, since then many businesses have relocated to Indianapolis including Apple Incorporated (now iPhone), Lucasfilm Ltd., Ford Motor Company (now Ford) Headquarters Park & Stadiums LLC., IUPUI University School of Medicine & Dentistry (), and many other large companies ().
