It served as a garrison for the area until 1819 when it was moved to Terre Haute, Indiana and renamed Fort Dearborn again. In 1825, the army abandoned Fort Dearborn and moved its headquarters to Indianapolis. The fort remained a military stronghold until 1865 when it was decommissioned and sold to private owners. The next year, 1865, saw the arrival of General Grant’s Union army during the American Civil War. The army occupied Fort Dearborn and soon began construction on a new fortification called Vincennes which became known as Camp Grant after General Grant’s headquarters moved there. Vincennes served as an important military base throughout the war and was eventually decommissioned in 1870. In 1871, Congress passed legislation providing for a national guard system and authorizedthe organization of companies of artillery officers from stateside volunteer militias called into service by federal authorities under certain conditions (e.g., if they were present at any insurrection or rebellion). On July 1, 1871, two companies from “Fort Wayne Regiment” – one from Ohio and one from Michigan – joined forces with Company A (7th Infantry) of Illinois Infantry Regiment to form the 2nd National Guard Battalion at Camp Dearborn under command of Colonel John Dorman Neely (1811-1892). This battalion became part of Regular Army on October 15th, 1872 when Captain Augustus Cushing Troup succeeded Colonel Neely as lieutenant colonel commanding battalion; 1st LtCol George Wickersham replaced Captains Ewing Jorgenson (1829-1900) and Willis Husted (1838-1915), both captains resigned because of health problems related to their service with Indian Wars campaigns in Mexico City; First Lt Col Charles Pemberton took command on November 6th following appointment by Secretary Stanton; On January 14th, 1886 Major General John Sherman transferred 1st Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer’s Battalion 25th Infantry Regiment from Rock Island Barracks Missouri to Camp Chase near Dayton Ohio where he relieved FirstLt Col Charles Pemberton who had been acting colonel since November 6th due to illness; Headquarters Battery 3rd Artillery Brigade arrived here December 10 1888 followed by Headquarters Squadron 33rd Cavalry Division arriving January 11 1889 also under Commandant Edward Abbey Johnston Jr.; these arrivals marked completion of transportation preparations necessary for activation at camp Chase ; 2d Battalion Chicago militia regiment arrived February 23 1890 commanded by Second Lieutenants Orion Wirthman (baptized Dec 5 1860 died Apr 9 1896) & Hiram Sibley(baptized Feb 20 1861 died Jan 30 1924); this battalion became part Of Regular Army on March 3 1890 also becoming Headquarters Battery 2d Artillery Brigade attached here Camp Chase was officially activated on May 8 1890 by order of President Grover Cleveland as Military District #5 located within territorial boundaries established by Act Oct 20 1880 organic act giving authority for organization etc.; this district included all male inhabitants over sixteen years old living within 600 miles radius including residents inside unorganized territory west bank above Des Moines river including that portion now owned & operated by Iowa state government; Within this district were organized three regiments each comprising five battalions divided into two brigades each plus field batteries: 21st Infantry Regiment newly arrive April 1790 & 4th Kansas Volunteer Militia regiment arrived August 24 1890 also under commandant James Biddle Sampson [1] . Lake Station is a small community in Union Township, LaPorte County, Indiana. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1825 by five families from Illinois who named it for John Fitch, the first postmaster of Terre Haute. The community grew rapidly and by 1840 had a store, two churches, and sixty-six residents. In 1845 the town acquired its present name when General David Hunter abandoned his army encampment on the west bank of the White River and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Lake Station became an important stop on the northern railroads serving central Indiana and also became known for its summer resorts which attracted wealthy visitors from all over America. In 1912 Lake Station was merged with neighboring unincorporated communities of Westville to form one large village under the name of Terre Haute. After World War II many businesses closed or moved away as technology changed and manufacturing declined throughout much of western Michigan; however, some remained in town while others relocated to other towns in southern Indiana or within Ohio until they were finally forced out by federal regulations mandating equal treatment for all villages with a population over 2,000 people
