Lake Station is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1848 by Jacob and Anna Paine as a farmstead on the east side of Lake Station Creek. The first post office opened in 1850, and the first store opened in 1851. By 1865, the community had become an incorporated place with a school and two churches. In 1892, the community began to grow rapidly due to railroad development; by 1900 it had over 100 residents. After World War I, many small businesses closed because of difficult economic times; however, most residents continued to work on the local farms until after World War II when larger businesses took over. In 1951, large changes occurred when an electric power plant was built near the town limits; this led to a rapid growth in population and business until 1966 when traffic congestion caused layoffs for several businesses which led to widespread poverty within the community that has persisted ever since. In recent years there have been efforts made by both locals and outsiders to revive what has been called "the forgotten city" of Lake Station: recolonizing or redeveloping abandoned properties along with creating new public amenities such as a park/sandal beach/fishing pier/restaurant complex are all being considered as ways to bring life back into this dying town while also helping preserve its history and culture
Lake Station is a small town in Howard County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first settler in Lake Station was James McKnight. He and his family moved to the area in 1827 from Logansport, Pennsylvania. McKnight built a cabin on the site which he named "Castlewood." In 1846, McKnight's son John built a house on what is now Main Street and named it after his father. The town began to develop around this house until it had two stores and a post office in 1881 when it became an incorporated village under the name of "Lake Station." During World War II, Lake Station produced troops for the U.S. Army; one man was drafted here during that time period In 1951, Lake Station voters approved annexation by Evansville because of its proximity to other cities in the city limits such as Westville and Eastville. The annexation sets off many protests from residents who argue that their village should remain autonomous even though it falls within city boundaries
