Lafayette is an unincorporated community in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. It is located on the west side of the river near the border with present-day West Lafayette. The village was founded by refugees from France in 1824. The population was 1,643 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Lafayette was Nicholas de Bourg who arrived in 1825 and built a cabin on the east bank of the river. A year later he married Catharine White and began to raise crops and cattle on his new land. By 1830 Lafayette had a school, Methodist Church, blacksmith shop and several stores. In 1835 John Sibley moved to Lafayette from Terre Haute and set up a store there. He also began to build a sawmill which became one of the largest in central Indiana. In 1840 Hosea Stout settled at what is now known as Stout's Crossing on the south side of the river opposite Lafayette.. In 1846 Elijah Dickey arrived from Kentucky with his family and plowed some land adjacent to Lafayette for farming purposes.. From 1847 until 1860 it was part of Putnam County; but when Hendricks County was formed May 6,1860, it became part of that county too In 1865 James Wills donated 100 acres (40 ha) along South Road (now State Route 219) just north of town for public use as a park named after himself - Wills Park today . The area around present day downtown has been developed into many homes since then including those owned by Mayor Pete Buttigieg Lafayette experienced growth following World War II when thousands of soldiers returning home brought their families here seeking new opportunities than they could find back home. Three post-war malls were opened: Macy's (1948), Sears (1949) and JCPenney/West Elm (1955). These anchors helped solidify downtown as an anchor commercial district while also creating jobs for local people during this time period
