Lafayette was founded by Frenchmen in 1764 as a trading post on the confluence of the White and La Ville rivers. The first white settler was Pierre de la Varenne. Lafayette grew rapidly after its incorporation as a village in 1802. In 1824, Lafayette became capital of Hancock County and was host to the state's first public meeting. The city's rich history dates back to when it served as the temporary capital of Indiana during the American Revolution because Cairo, Illinois refused to recognize Washington's proclamation that Indianapolis be the new state capital. In 1830, Lafayette became home to both houses of Congress before becoming an independent city again in 1871 after passage of a charter providing for municipal autonomy within limits prescribed by then-State Governor John Pappus IV. A year later, Lafayette hosted World Expo '18' which showcased American industry and technologies against international competition from Europe and Japan. The city has been plagued by crime and budget cuts over recent years but recent successes include an increase in tourism (mainly through agriculture) and reestablishment of downtown business districts including arts district which had been napalmed by redevelopment efforts decades ago according to some residents who have seen revitalization potential there since then; Frenchman Street being renovated as a pedestrian mall with restaurants, art galleries and other attractions; construction starting on what will likely be one of largest mixed-use developments ever built near downtown – dubbed "CityCenter" – comprising office towers/residential units (the top floors having retail), commercial corridors leading into streetscapes that run all around the building bounded by Michigan Avenue NE., Calumet Street NW., State Road 270 SE., Broadway SW., First National Bank Building & Cadillac Place SE.; two large park areas complete with concert venues (the Veterans Memorial Coliseum & restored Soldier Field), basketball arenas (Hancock County Fairgrounds & Lucas Oil Stadium,) baseball stadiums (Troy Park & Goodyear Ballpark,) several smaller parks including Oneida Lakefront Park near downtown where concerts are often held,' numerous events/markets throughout year centered around "Fiesta USA", various festivals typically celebrating Hispanic culture or some feature related to Fiesta USA each year - most notably RazaUSAWeekend(a weeklong event focused on Mexican culture) - largest such event outside Mexico City -500+ people attend annually Lafitexture Festival featuring local Artist exhibiting their works outdoors open air between May 1st thru 5th
