The Lafayette Air Force Base Historical Society (LAFBS) is a non-profit organization that preserves the history of the base and its employees. The society was founded in 1957, and since then has collected over 1,000 items from the military, including artifacts, uniforms, memorabilia and more. Lafayette is a historic city in the U.S. state of Indiana. It was founded in 1792 by General Lafayette and is the county seat of Lafayette County. The population was 21,747 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous town in both Lafayette County and Howard County, together with Indianapolis. Lafayette is located on the east bank of the Monon River, about northwest of Indianapolis and south of Terre Haute. According to the 2010 census, its total area is , all land within present-day Lafayette Township except for a small part on the north side that has been annexed into neighboring Indianapolis since 1922. The first European settlement in what would become Lafayette Township was made by Hugh Mercer on December 14, 1792 when he came overland from Pennsylvania as part of an expedition led by George Rogers Clark. Mercer built a log cabin on what is now Delaware Street in what is now downtown Lafayette and called it Mercer's Ferry Landing because ferryboats operated across the river there at that time. The first permanent settler in what would become Lafayette Township was James McDonald who arrived November 9, 1802 from Ohio along with his family and brought three slaves with him to live behind his farmhouse on North Dixon Street in present day Elmira Heights neighborhood of Indianapolis until they were sold to John Nicholson around 1800 BC. In 1805, McDonald moved his family again – this time to a farmstead known as Green Gables which still stands today as a private home near East Washington Avenue and I-465 Speedway Boulevard inside current-day Terre Haute Municipal limits adjacent to Purdue University’s West campus). One important event that occurred during this early period took place when General Anthony Wayne bombarded French Fort Mifflin from December 8–10 1812 while under pressure from United States President Thomas Jefferson following American victories at Great Lakes Battle (December 7) and Battle of Paris (December 11). On January 1st 1813 General Wayne marched through Lafayette township under cover of darkness carrying munitions upriver after successfully suppressing an Indian attack at Ironton Bridge just downstream from where he had earlier crossed overland days earlier; construction began immediately upon his return to Indiana — an event chronicled extensively by local historian Nathan Hale Russell Jr.. Lafayette was a small town in Indiana when it welcomed its first European settlers in the late 18th century. Today, much of what once occupied this square has been replaced by office towers housing both commercial tenants and IUPUI students; however, a few notable structures such as Stroud Hall still stand within walking distance of campus. During much of its history, Lafayette also served as a center for religious activity for eastern Indians who had relocated to Indiana during various waves of European settlement throughout North America between 1775-1803; these Indian arrivals were known collectively as "Mennonites." After Illinois Congress repealed legislation granting land eastward along Lake Michigan to Mennonites in 1816 following Indian attacks on white settlers there that year, some 2,000+ East Jersey Mennonites decided to move westward into what is now central Indiana in search of farmland closer to their families back home rather than stay put among hostile Native Americans who had recently become powerful thanks to their success timber trading operations which developed overnight after passage of General Order No. 5 issued by Governor Daniel Bruce on October 3, 1800 forbid any hostilities against Native Americans without express written consent from Great Lakes natives under their control - see also Treaty Of Fort Wayne
