Small batch coffee history in La Porte, Indiana began with a grocery store that served coffee from small batches. In the early 1900s, when La Porte was an agricultural town of around 1,000 people, the grocery store was the only place to get coffee. The beans were roasted and ground by the owner and his family. Cup of Joe's Coffee opened up in LaPorte in 1974, and it quickly became one of the most popular small batch coffee companies in the area. La Porte was founded in 1854 and named for Rear Admiral James H. LaPorte who commanded American forces during the Mexican–American War. The first post office in La Porte was established in 1855, and its name was changed to LaPorte in 1865. Non-Hispanic whites account for 82%, Hispanics for 10%, Asians for 5%, and natives for 3%. There also exists one group that does not identify with any racial group: people who identified as "other." This category includes people who were born outside of America but self-identified as being either “born again” Christians or atheists/agnostics when questioned about their religious beliefs—a practice known as "catholicism." Overall speaking though there is an overwhelming majority within each racial demographic that identifies with one major race or another."
