A post office operated in La Porte from 1828 to 1840. In 1846, a group of Methodist missionaries arrived in La Porte and started a mission school. In 1850, a mill was built in La Porte by Samuel Henschel, which became a mainstay for the community until it closed in 1904. Lutheran missionaries arriving inLa Portein1850 began teaching Christianity to Native Americans. From 1861 to 1865, Battle Creek native Alexander McNaught fought with Confederate forces during the American Civil War at nearby Fort Wayne before he joined the Union army and surrendered at Vincennes Arsenal. After the war, McNaught moved to La Porte and worked as a farmer until his death in 1903.
