La Porte, Indiana is an unincorporated community in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. La Porte is located on the North-South railway line. The post office at La Porte was opened in 1872 and served until it was discontinued in 1959. The first settler in La Porte was John Fenton who arrived in 1836. In 1902 a school was built and named after Mrs. Laddie Pemberton of Decatur Township, Illinois (later part of LaPorte). It operated for one year before closed due to financial difficulties. A new school building was constructed in 1904 and named after Mrs. Crawford Hargrave of Decatur Township (now Denison) which also served as its administrative offices until it closed in 1957.

La Porte, Indiana is a small town in LaPorte County, Indiana. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first people to live in La Porte were Marcy and George Henton. They built a log cabin on the hill above the present day school district in 1854. It was destroyed by a storm in 1861 but was rebuilt with interlocking logs and an addition of clapboard walls. In 1868, John Prentice bought land near what is now downtown La Porte and started to build houses there. He named his home "Prentice." In 1907, Alice Ackerland moved to La Porte from Wabash Falls, Indiana and started a grocery store on Main Street that became one of the most successful stores in the area. She also operated her own bakery which continued until 1914 when it merged with Mrs. John Fonda's bakery chain operation on Market Street). In 1925, LaPorte had its first post office which was located at 6th and Jefferson Streets (now known as State Road 519). The postmaster was James Satterfield who served until 1935 when he was replaced by Harry Whitehurst Jr.. In 1938, World War II began and many residents left for military service; however, few returned home after the war ended. A new high school opened in 1945 adjacent to East High School; however, it closed within three years because of lack of enrollment (similarly to nearby Fishers High School which closed in 1954). After several unsuccessful attempts at constructing a new high school (including offering $5 per student for tuition), local citizens erected their own building on North Third Street between Court Avenue and US-41/64 just south of current-day I-465/I-475 junction (). This building served as LaPorte's high school from 1945 until 1968 when it burned down (); however, reconstruction has since begun with plans to add another wing that would encompass all or portions of both buildings (the old wing currently houses community center services). On October 25th 1978 an event occurred that has been referred to variously as "The Day Of The Industry Revolution" or "The Birth Of An American Community". Over 4000 farmers from across central Indiana assembled at Greater Lafayette Convention Center for an exhibition called "Farmers Markets: How To Create Local Economic Development". On this occasion President Jimmy Carter announced federal funding for Agricultural Research Service programs aimed at solving food problems through research projects within agricultural fields
