Gourmet Coffee History in La Porte, Indiana began with the first coffeehouses on Market Street in La Porte in 1892. The first coffee shop was called The Grapes and it served a mixed bag of coffees that cost one dollar each. It was run by John D’Angelo and his son, Julius. The business grew and soon there were six different coffee shops operating on Market Street. In 1912, Harry Bemis opened The Star-Keeper which became one of the most popular coffee houses in town. His coffee beans were roasted at his family's home near Mount Vernon Cemetery. By 1916, all of the businesses on Market Street had closed because of prohibition. However, Harry reopened The Grapes as a speakeasy under the name Peguero after he acquired another liquor license for the business from Mayor Jules Steinmetz. In 1927, Artie Smith opened Dutch Bros., which became one of LaPorte's most popular restaurants until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1929, Donatello Moretti opened Italian Grocery Store next to Dutch Bros., which also served as their cafe until it closed its doors in 1984 also. In 1933, Johnny Appleseed started selling apples from his truck outside Dutch Bros.. In 1937, Bob Caffrey started serving hot chocolate from his van parked across the street from Dutch Bros.. He continued to serve this beverage until he died in 1992 at age 92 years old.. In 1950s-1960s there weren't many gourmet cafes open in La Porte because they were mostly catering to tourists who wanted to sample some of Indiana's famous foods likeIndiana Pudding or Hoosier Cheese Cake tourney winning recipe by Betty Crocker (now marketed by Nestle). However starting around 1960s these cafes turned into popular tourist destinations where locals would come to enjoy delicious espresso drinks made fresh right at their doorstep!

La Porte is a small town in Indiana, located about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. La Porte is part of the Terre Haute, IN-IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become LaPorte was Levi Coffin in 1814. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the White River. In 1824, Daniel Boone and his group of men explored this area and found evidence that there were other settlements hereabouts. They named their new settlement after General Lafayette (of France). Lafayette had been captured by General Jackson during the American Civil War and was brought to Mobile, Alabama to be tried for treason. When it became apparent that he would not be executed as planned, President James K. Polk ordered Lafayette paroled and allowed him to return home to LaPorte where he met with some local landowners to discuss plans for a new community here on the east bank of the White River opposite present day junction of US 52/Indiana state line and I-465/National Highway 476 east of downtown Terre Haute (the town now lies on land between these two highways). The idea for a new community originated with Dr. J.-C Bourgeois who was also responsible for developing nearby Noblesville into one of America’s leading economic communities during this time period; however, lack of funding delayed its construction until after World War II when plentiful funds were available from government coffers following victory in that war’s conflict against Nazi Germany which borders La Porte on its north side – an event celebrated annually by Memorial Day parade participants as “Lafayette Victory Parade”; accordingly, both good old fashioned Main Street shopping along State Road 2nd Avenue within minutes walking distance from all post office activities served as key attractions throughout those years until recently when satellite TV service has taken over primary functions serving most residents since then through out much or all evening hours…. LaPorte today owes much more than simply its name conjured up by anyone looking upon it from outside – many people have contributed significantly over time either directly or indirectly thereto such as: Mayor Bruce Sowell who has presided over our every step forward ever since we adopted our current form including initiating many improvements himself while running unopposed each year; Mrs. Irma Ellerbe who volunteered countless hours making beauty treatments available free OFSTED schools children during school lunch hour starting back in 1984 thru2011 even though she couldn’t always get there due to prior engagements elsewhere; Eldridge Smith Sr., Mr./Mrs./ kids just coming home from school each day past third grade today THANKSGIVING NOON so they can enjoy their favorite “Auntie Vergie” Pancake House specials like ham & eggs benedict waffles & fried onions etc.; numerous citizens attorneys turned law enforcement officers once upon a time many thanks go out too retired Sgt John Griggs (& others) currently serving 5th District Court Dept 7 having started doing so almost 50 years ago next month oldest female police officer west side USA Jeri Stevens presently serving same position….. Plus innumerable others whose names are unknown but whose cumulative effort makes up everything important about this historic community… We wouldn't exist without them!

The first settlers in this area were led by Captain John Smeaton, who arrived in 1814 and built a cabin on the present site of La Porte. By 1830, there were 10 families living in LaPorte. Farming and lumbering became the mainstay of the town's economy during this time. In 1836, post office officials renamed LaPorte after Indiana's capital city, Indianapolis. However, growth stalled in La Porte due to lack of resources and competition from neighboring villages. In 1846, following passage of the United States Constitution, La Porte became an unincorporated community within Posey County. The population declined until it peaked at around 100 residents in 1870 when a new railroad was constructed through town and began to stimulate growth again. From 1880-1920,LaPorte experienced modest but steady growth as an agricultural center with prominent citizens such as J.B Blair (1886-1963) enjoying prosperous lives despite difficult times. When prohibition took effect in 1920, many businesses closed including those run by women such as Mrs. Harry Ladd (1906-1990). Despite some setbacks during World War II (such as being bombed),La Porte resumed its original form by 1970 when Interstate 90 bypassed town entirely leaving it largely unaffected by economic development outside its borders since then
