Air Force gift history in La Porte, Indiana began on December 8th, 1947 when the United States Air Force donated a F-80 Shooting Star to the city of La Porte. The fighter was used as part of the first unit stationed in the city and it quickly became a favorite among residents and taxpayers alike. The jet continued to be loaned out to different military units until it arrived at its current home on May 25th, 1990. Since then, it has been used for training and ceremony purposes by both the Air Force and local law enforcement agencies. Today, the F-80 is still one of La Porte’s most popular assets and is often seen at events such as rodeo meets or fairs.
A few years ago, an Air Force colonel decided to start a fundraiser for his unit. He collected money from members of the military and put it towards buying new fighter jets. The colonel was able to purchase two new F-15Cs and had the plane brought in to the base for fly-offs. His Unit was so proud of him!
The LaPorte Aeronautical Historical Society is a non-profit organization that has been in operation since 1974. The society holds an annual air force gift history event where members can come together to historians and Air Force officers to learn about the history of Air Force gifts to La Porte. This year’s event was held on Saturday, October 17th and it was a great success!
In La Porte, Indiana, in 1912, a new town was founded by three farmers who migrated from Ohio. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, the first U.S. governor of California. When General Fremont moved to La Porte in 1849, he left his worldly possessions behind and donated all of his land to the community. This set the tone for the town’s founding: A sense of community and civic responsibility was instilled in La Porte from its inception. The early residents of La Porte were mostly farmers who grew crops and raised livestock on their property. However, over time, some businesspeople and professionals started to move into the community as well. In 1955, when LaPorte became an unincorporated community within Dearborn Township, it became one of the few communities in Michigan with a full-time post office system
The USAF operates three communities in the continental United States. These are at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, and Whiteman AFB, Missouri. The Tinker Air Force Base community is home to the 1st Fighter Wing which flies the F-15 Eagle; 2nd Fighter Wing which flies the F-16 Fighting Falcon; and 3rd Fighter Wing which fly the F-18 Hornet. The Whiteman AFB community is home to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (Air Mobility Command) as well as two wings:the 43d Airlift Wing flying C-130 Hercules aircraft and the 45th Airlift Wing flying Boeing 727 aircraft. In addition, there are nine squadrons of fighter jets that are stationed at these facilities:the 82d Tactical Fighter Squadron flying Republic F-35B Lightning II fighters; the 145th Tactical Fighter Squadron flying Lockheed Martin A-10A Warthog tanks; the 141st Tactical Fighter Squadronflying Raytheon KC-135 Stratotankers;the 192d Expeditionary Aircraft Group providing support for Operation Noble Eagle air strikes in Afghanistan;and Headquarters Electronics Maintenance Squadron performing electronic warfare maintenance on a variety of USAF equipment.
The USAF has given a number of gifts over the years, both in recognition of their services and to individuals who have made a significant contribution. Some examples include the donation of an F-22 Raptor to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio, and the addition of two Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental Airliners to the USAF fleet.
La Porte was once a thriving small town in Indiana. But over time, the community fell victim to various factors such as economic decline, crime and methamphetamine abuse. La Porte's decline began in the late 1990s when the steel industry took a hit, leaving the community with little hope for future prosperity. However, despite its challenges, La Porte has continued to thrive over the years thanks to its unique history and residents who are dedicated to their community. LaPorte is located at 40° 30' N 86° 12' W on National Road 100 north of Fort Wayne. The first post office was established in 1827. At one point in its history, La Porte had a population of around 1,000 people. The economy of La Porte changed dramatically after World War II when large companies fled Steel Town due to high prices for raw materials overseas. However, by the early 2000s, La Porte's economy had begun to rebound thanks to new businesses that started up in nearby towns such as Fort Wayne and Merrillville. These businesses have helped support local economies and continue to contribute to LaPorte's growth today. One of the most significant aspects of LaPorte's success has been its strong sense of community spirit which has enabled locals to band together and work together towards common goals. This sense of communalism is evident throughoutLaPorte's history; from its beginnings as a small town struggling against seemingly insurmountable odds, through periods during which it struggled but never gave up hope, all the way until today when it remains an important part of the fabric of this small town. Despite these challenges - including recent drug-related incidents - LaPorte continues to thrives due largely to its residents’ dedication and willingness To fight for what they believe in even when things look tough."
In 1810, La Porte was founded by Isaac Taft and James K. Polk. It was a small village of 8 people at the time and it wasn't until 1840 that it became a town with a population of over 100 people. La Porte's first courthouse was built in 1843. The town also had its own school, post office, jail, and library before it merged with neighboring towns in 1857.
