Kokomo, Indiana is a small village located in Johnson County, Indiana. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. Kokomo is the county seat of Johnson County. Kokomo's history dates back to 1836 when it was founded as a trading post by James Doolittle and others who traveled through this area on their way to trade with the Indian nations. The post continued to be in operation until 1957. The town of Kokomo was founded by Josephine Acker in 1898. It grew rapidly due to its location within easy driving distance of Indianapolis and other large cities. In 2002, Kokomo was selected as one of "25 USA Towns That Made an Impact" by Forbes magazine and has since been home to several large technology companies including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Dell and Microsoft among others. There are several historically significant buildings in the town such as the old courthouse which serves as both a museum and law enforcement headquarters today and also houses the library which opened in 1907 (the first public library west of Chicago). Other notable properties include Stroudsburg Battlefield National Monument which includes a reconstructed Civil War battlefield where battles were fought between Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant and Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell; John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum located within the former White House; and Gibson Place shopping center which is home to several popular retailers including Macy's, Sears, JCPenney and Supreme Court Justice David Souter's house from his time spent living in Kokomo during his term on the bench from 1984-1987 (he later moved to nearby La Porte). Due to its growing popularity as a tourist destination, Kokoma has seen some growth in its nightlife industry over recent years with various bars opening up throughouttown just for tourists - something that helps keep local businesses open despite being close to major metropolitan areas like Indianapolis or Chicago!
