Kendallville, Indiana is a small town in the western part of the state of Indiana. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kendallville is located on State Road 54 and is about 20 miles west of Terre Haute. The community has a rich history dating back to 1805 when it was founded by John Kendall and his family. In 1824, General James Krieger moved north from Michigan and purchased land in what is now Kendallville while he was on military Expedition against Napoleon Bonaparte. He named the community after himself and this continues to be its name today. The first post office was established in 1830, and until 1905 it served as Kendallville Junction. Today, Kendallville still has a strong presence with three churches serving the community: First Baptist Church (founded in 1825), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1853), and Catholic Parish (established in 1907). There are also several businesses including two banks and four restaurants/cafes within walking distance of the school district's main campus. The village of Kendallville was founded in 1814 by John Kendall and his wife, Rebecca. The first post office was established in 1824. The town of Kendallville was erected in 1834, and the population reached 1,000 in 1840. In 1852, the U.S. Post Office moved from its original location to a new building on the east side of town. That same year, the first school was built in Kendallville. In 1860, a sawmill was built near the community center and began production of lumber. In 1865, a gristmill also became operational in Kendallville. By 1870, the population had grown to 2,500 people. During World War I (1914-18), approximately 100 soldiers served with the United States Army here as part of various units; most notably as infantrymen at Camp White Sulphur Springs located adjacent to present-day Union Elementary School on South Main Street. After World War I ended, many residents left for other parts of Indiana because of high taxes and economic conditions after years of wartime industrial production within Indiana's borders; however, many returned to live in Kendallville followinglection campaigns that were held throughout 1919 and 1920 resulting in increased political power within Indianapolis due to white insurgency against black majority rule across much rural Indiana during this time period known as " Reconstruction." In 1922 an additional school was constructed east of town along what is now State Road 606 which soon became home to many businesses including grain elevators and several churches providing services such as educational opportunities for those living within its boundaries; prior to this time it had been primarily homeschooling families who used fields surrounding town for their agricultural pursuits while remaining connected via friendly relationships with local farmers who supplied them with necessary goods and services while they conducted their education courses inside their homespun log cabin style buildings that still remain extant today next door to Union Elementary School on South Main Street known locally as “The Old Mill” where Mrs. Hargrave still reside today playing music each day from her late 1800s era tune book collection she collected over these many years inside her large front porch rocker seat reading aloud from these valuable old784 pages long historic documents classified by date back over 50 years ago when she would take me out each day before lunch into her small wood burning stove room outside facing south west towards central Indiana countryside setting sun behindlarge live oak tree growing around her property surrounded by tall grassy prairie fencing measuring about 25 feet high) we enjoyed our free play days here every week during summer months long past until recently when our nearby state government elementary school closed down due mainlyto budget cuts however we will always have access to our beautiful large park located just east of town off SR 606 complete with playground/ gym/ tennis court/ soccer field/ water tower sceneries including an active Gold Rush era mining era history museum open daily 9am – 5pm latest admission is $3 adults/$2 seniors ages 62+ / children under 12 are FREE if accompanied by an adult or guardian
