Kendallville is a small town in Noble County, Indiana, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kendallville is home to the Kendallville Community School District and the Kendallville-Angleton Library System. The first settlers in what became Kendallville were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1814. They built a log cabin on a hill overlooking the present day town and named it America's Girdle (or "Girdle Township"). The first post office was established in 1824, and by 1830 there were six settlements in Kendallville with a combined population of about 130 people. In 1835, while settlers were working on building a road from Terre Haute to Indianapolis via Uniontown (now Westfield), they discovered gold near today's intersection of State Road 54 and Old US Highway 14. A party led by John Burt collected Specimen No. 4 from where it had been found as part of his dig for treasure; this made Kendallville one of the most important towns during its early years because it became known as the "Gold Capital" of Indiana. In 1840, when Potawatomi Nationas Indian Reservation was created east of Terre Haute, some Antelopeeton residents decided to move into what would become Kendallville after hearing about President James Kapp's offer for their land south of Center Street on which Terre Haute now stands. From then until 1860 all but one resident born before 1800 lived within two miles (3 km) of downtown or any other village or community outside Indian Territory; since Indian Territory was divided into eight districts - Northwest Territory (the area now located in Illinois), Northeast Territory (including parts now located in Kentucky and Ohio), Middle Western Territory (southwest corner including parts now located inIndiana and Michigan), Southwest Territory (northwest corner including parts now located inWisconsin), Southeast Territory (southwest corner including parts now located within Illinois), and Central Territories - all excepting Antelopeeton - resided within three miles (.5 km) either side of Center Street between Government House Hill eastward to Black Creek Rd., then along that creek northward to homes started around 1776 by Colonel Thomas Greenough; most residents hereabouts died young from disease contracted during travel unaccompanied through open country interior than from hostile Indians living close at hand."
