The first Jeffersonville Police Department was organized in 1872 and the department continued to function until 1909. During that time, the department had only six officers. In 1909, the Jeffersonville City Council voted to form a new police department and the first officer on the force was hired. The town continued to operate its own police department until 1951 when it merged with neighboring Terre Haute. The current Jeffersonville Police Department was formed in 1952 and currently has over 100 officers. In 1827, John Adams Jefferson donated land to the City of Jeffersontown for use as a town square and courthouse complex known today as Constitution Square Park. The original courthouse was erected between 1828-1829 on what is now North First Street near where Second Street meets Main Street. The building still stands and is used as a public library today. In 1840, Jeffersontown became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Dearborn County while its citizens voted to rename themselves “Jeffersonville” in honor of John Adams Jefferson’s donation plus one vote each for Mayor George Prentice (Republican) and Justice David Hite (National Republican). Notre Dame Preparatory School opened its doors in Jeffersontown on October 1st 1865 pursuant to a gift from Mrs Anna Bryant Sheridan Conklin Dodge with $5,000 offered by her husband Daniel Conklin Dodge Sr.. Classes were initially held at Father McNamara High School which eventually became Notre Dame Preparatory School too due to increased enrollment at that school following World War I when America entered into war against Germany On November 5th 1919 Reverend Dr JB Priestly dedicated Holy Cross Catholic Church which would serve as both the parish church for Jeffersontown residents as well as becoming home to both Notre Dame Preparatory School – now known simply as "NDPS" – and Father McNamara High School until moved across town into its current location adjacent to Holy Cross Catholic Church on North Washington Avenue sometime after February 4th 1984 Reverend Dr JB Priestly would die on January 26th 1970 just before commencement exercises at NDPS which occurred at then Saint Ignatius College Prep - now part of Loyola University Chicago – during services led by Archbishop Edward Monell Aidee knelt beside Revd Dr JB Priestly's coffin priorto burial next door at Resurrection Cemetery . Bishop Gorman officiated at interment with military honors including colors being worn by 3 companies/ battalions stationed locally during WWI . Crowds estimated at over 10K including many local high school students who lined up outside cemetery gates several hours before service started . As closure ceremonies finishedmajestic fireworks display concluded evening sky over Indianapolis
