Jeffersonville is a small town in central Indiana, United States. It was founded in 1815 by James K. Polk and his wife Rachel. The town was named after Thomas Jefferson, who lived nearby at the time of its founding. In 1847, the town became part of the newly formed Kosciusko County and remained so until it was dissolved as a result of local government consolidation in 1968. As of 2010, the population of Jeffersonville was 2,898 people. The first settler in what is now Jeffersonville was James K. Polk who arrived with his family from Kentucky in 1815. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Ohio River and named it "Jeffersonville". ThePolks were among the earliest settlers in what would become Kosciusko County, and their home remains one of the most intact examples remaining from that era. Other early residents include Isaac Backus (1797-1867), John Ahern (1801-1860), and George Stephenson (1792-1865). The community continued to grow rapidly during its early years; by 1830, there were only 10 people living in Jeffersonville while also having a post office. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living within three miles of where they had originally located their homes. That same year saw another significant growth trend; businesses began popping up all around town to provide essential services such as grocery store, clothing store, mechanic shop etcetera for those who still resided within easy reach by bike or walking personally to them - this would continue into the late 1800s when cars started arriving into town too! During this time period as well there were many important events that took place both locally and nationally significance which have shaped how things currently function today including: 1) The opening of Fort Wayne's first general store on Main Street - which helped spur more business development throughout Kosciusko County 2) The admission of Kosciusko County into Indiana statehood on September 15th – marking an important event for both locals and visitors alike 3) Andrew Johnson becoming President – marking yet another milestone for Jeffersontown specifically 4) All Ulysses S Grant soldiers being ordered back home due to poor health following Battle at Chickamauga – later followed up with General Sherman's march through Georgia 5) Abraham Lincoln being assassinated – resulting in great political changes within America 6) World War I starting – seeing heavy combat taking place throughout Central Europe 7) Prohibition beginning legalisation across America 8) Franklin D Roosevelt becoming President – leading to major economic changes 9) World War II Begins with Japan attacking Pearl Harbor – resulting in vast amounts loss for both sides 10) The end of World War II saw much rebirth & redevelopment taking place across Indiana
Jeffersonville was founded in 1829 by James K. Polk and John Quincy Adams. The townspeople were natives of Kentucky and had come to Indiana for the agricultural opportunities. Jeffersonville became a center for trade and industry, with a cotton gin, bakery, hotel, and other businesses being built in its early years. In the 1840s, the town began to grow rapidly as Methodists started moving into the area from nearby Indianapolis. By 1850, Jeffersonville had 10 stores, 50 homes, and 100 businesses. It was an important commercial center in the region and served as a base for Native American traders as well. In 1854, when Andrew Johnson was elected president of America, he decided to move the Ulysses S. Grant Administration's headquarters from Chicago to Washington D.C., which led to heavy development in Jeffersonville over the next few years. After 1865 when America became embroiled in warring factions following Reconstruction efforts at home, business declined until it resumed during World War I when production increased due to new demand from Germany after its entry into World War I
