Coffee has been a part of the Indy community for over 100 years. One of the earliest coffee shops in Indianapolis was The Coffee House on Market Street, which opened in 1892. The shop served coffee and pastries from 7am to 7pm and was known for its fresh squeezed fruit juices and scones. In 1936, The Coffee House became the first coffee house in Indiana to open with air conditioning. It is also documented that Mayor John D’Alessandro and Mrs. Anna Shaw were patrons of The Coffee House at one time. In 1954, Dutch Bros., Inc., founded by Bob Dutch, opened its first roastery in Indianapolis. At that time, Indiana was the only state in the US where roasting beans were done onsite at a coffee shop. In 1961, Starbucks opened its first store in Indianapolis – located on Southport Boulevard – making it one of the first US stores to carry coffee from different origins including Java and Ethiopia. At that time Starbucks began serving cappuccinos and lattes with added milk (the first American-made cold drink). The store closed in 1998 but reopened as an online store two years later under the name Starbuck's Online Store Indy LLC.
