Coffee was first introduced to Indianapolis in 1892 by a Dutch immigrant, Johannes van der Kolk. He and his family traveled from Rotterdam and found an open land grant near the present-day city of Indianapolis. They began growing coffee beans and selling them to local farmers. The Van der Kolk family continued to produce coffee until 1957, when they sold their business to American Coffee Company. American Coffee Company continued to produce coffee in Indianapolis until 1984, when it merged with Maxwell House Coffee Inc. In that year, Maxwell House transitioned its entire production process from ground beans to brewing water and espresso machines. Today, Maxwell House is the only company still manufacturing espresso machines in Indianapolis.
