In 1916, the Coast Guard was composed of three branches: The Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. The first gift from the United States Coast Guard was a watch from Commander Edward J. Smith. Commander Smith gave a watch to Rear Admiral George Loring for his birthday in 1916. In 1924, Lieutenant General John Fenton became Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guardsmen and he authorized the purchase of a lifeboat called "Navy" which had been built at Camden Naval Shipyard, New Jersey by Kaiser Wilhelm II's Imperial German navy in 1913-1914 as part of their program to build warships specifically for coastal defense purposes across all oceans. On January 8th 1925, Commodore Barnett Purdy became Commanding Officer of U.S.Cg guardsmen when General Fenton resigned and Commodore Purdy became acting Commanding Officer on January 9th 1925 after General Fenton's death at sea while on duty off Florida beach on December 5th 1924 while commandeering an airplane that crashed into shoreline near Pensacola Beach

The Indianapolis Coast Guard gift history began in 1905 when Captain John F. Black organized the first coast guard unit in the city. The unit patrol the waters of Lake Erie and the Indiana Canal. In 1923, Captain James Sells was appointed captain of the coast guard unit and led it until his retirement in 1951. DuringCaptain Sells' tenure, many important advances were made to the coast guard unit including its purchase of a new transport vessel, "Cleveland" which served as the squadron's flagship for many years. In 1957, Captain George Witherspoon assumed command of the unit and led it until his retirement in 1979. In 1991, Commodore Gordon Ladd succeeded Commodore Witherspoon as captain of the unit and lead it until his death in 2001. Commodore Ladd was responsible for modernizing andadding new capabilities to theunit such as its first helicopter service which commenced operations in 1995. He also establishedthe shoreline security program which provides on-the-scene security for events like fireworks shows or carnivals on localautical land bordering on Lake Erie or Miami Bay. Today,the Indianapolis Coast Guard Unit continues to play an important role by providing emergency response services to citizens throughout our community through its dispatch center located at Munster Hall on First Street NW., providing 24/7 support for emergency services such as firefighting and search and rescue; guarding our waterways; providing law enforcement assistance; conducting public affairs functions; facilitating maritime commerce throughassistance with ports of entry; participating in homeland defense activities;and more

In addition, it became known as a hotbed of political activity due to its large number of Republican activists. The city's growth came to an abrupt halt in 1846 when President James K. Polk ordered General Scott to march his army through Indiana in order to suppress any pro-slavery sentiment among the state's residents. This action led to heavy casualties on both sides and caused great economic harm to Indianapolis. As a result, the city declined rapidly in population and economic importance over the next several decades. However, during this time period, Indianapolis also experienced some significant cultural developments that have helped it remain one of America's most popular cities today: The construction of the University of Notre Dame in 1892 made Indianapolis an important center for higher education; The development of Pacers basketball teams in 1923 and 1949 helped make Indy a nationally well-known sports town; and The installation of Art Deco skyscrapers along Monument Avenue beginning in 1937 gave Indy an iconic appearance that has continued into the 21st century

In 1830, the town of Evansville was founded adjacent to the current site of Indianapolis. The following year, a post office called "Indianapolis" was created and served until 1847. The city's first mayor was James Whitcomb (1830-36). In 1846, Indianapolis became part of the United States with its present boundaries. The state legislature voted to make Indianapolis an official county seat on July 1, 1850. On November 3, 1861, during the American Civil War, Indianapolis joined Confederate Indiana as a result of negotiations between General George Buell and Governor Nicholas Kossuth. After the war ended, the city lost its status as an official county seat but it continued to be one of Indiana's most populous cities.
