The Indianapolis Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to 1865. The unit was first organized as the 10th Indiana Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1865. It was redesignated the 8th Infantry Regiment on November 3, 1868. The regiment served in the Union army during the American Civil War and saw combat at Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862 and Battle of Gettysburg on October 3, 1863. After the war, the regiment rejoined the United States military and served in World War I as part of Field Artillery Brigade No. 527th Infantry Regiment (later 4th Infantry Division). In World War II, the regiment participated in attacks against Pearl Harbor and Okinawa as part of Task Force 77. Upon its return from World War II, it was allotted to Indiana National Guard Company D (later 1st Battalion/5th Marines) on December 15, 1946. On November 9, 1950, itwas redesignated an infantry battalion under command of 2nd Brigade Combat Team/2nd Infantry Division Headquarters-Depot so that it could serve as an armored brigade headquarters battalion within 2nd Brigade Combat Team/2nd Infantry Division's parent divisional organization for training purposes only until May 1951 when it became an armored battalion once again with designation of 1st Battalion/5th Marines effective date thereof.� On January 6, 1957�the 10th Indiana Infantry Regiment became operational as artillery battalions with organic assignment to each brigade Combat Team structure throughout 2nd Brigade Combat Team/2nd Infantry Division.� concurrently with this change 1st Battalion/5th Marines also became artillery battalions.� The two artillery battalions continued their organic assignment through conversion to Armor brigades upon activation from Armor divisions �1st Battalion becoming brigade armor battalion activated on March 25 pursuant to command directive dated April 7; 2d Battalion becoming brigade armor battalion activated on May 14; 3rd Battalion becoming brigade armor battalion activated June 3; 4th Battalion becoming brigade armor battalion activated October 27.� These conversions were all accomplished without regimental input.� Army National Guard units are not subject to regular mobilization or deployment except in times of conflict�they are instead mobilized by state governments through their respective militia organizations which provide manpower for national guard duty while they are inactive�the mobilized infantry battalions remain available for use should such a mobilization become necessary however they must be returned home rapidly if called into action without warning or waiting period��theArmor brigades have remained fully manned sinceactivation although equipment and doctrine has been adapted slightly over time due primarily to unique mission requirements unique among army formations

The Indianapolis militia was organized on April 10, 1861, and the first regiment to serve was Company K of the 1st Indiana Infantry. The 1st Indiana Infantry Regiment was mustered in for three months on October 15, 1861. On November 2, 1861, General Scott ordered all volunteer companies in the state into service and when Companies K–8 were mustered in they became part of Company I of the 1st Indiana Infantry Regiment. On December 17th, 1861 General Scott proposed that each company be given a musket and one ball each. This proposal was accepted and on January 25th 1862 Companies I-4 were consolidated into Company K of the 1st Indiana Infantry Regiment with their existing arms and equipment. In 1863 detachments from Companies I-4 were sent to duty at Danville Arsenal as part of Brigade Hanks’s army expedition against Kentucky rebels under John C. Frémont. On November 11th 1863 these detachments released by order of General Scott returned home without taking any prisoners or spoils of war. The company insignia is an olive branch with a laurel wreath above it symbolizing service to country
