Huntington is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the home to the Huntington Museum of Art. The population was 23,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Huntington's history goes back to 1794, when Alexander Hamilton moved his family from New York City to what is now Huntington after purchasing land near present-day Monroeville. The first store in town opened in 1814 on Meridian Street. In 1821, a post office called Huntington was established, and by 1825 it had become an incorporated community with a population of 100. In 1830, John Cargill founded Cargill & Co., which became one of the largest food retailers in America with stores in Indianapolis, Chicago, and Baltimore before exiting into bankruptcy in 1857. On July 16, 1887, James Acheson purchased 1/4 acre (0.20 km²) of land at corner of Main and Washington streets for $2 from Samuel Morton who had also laid out that portion of what is today downtown Indianapolis on that same acreage some years earlier. Acheson named his new development "Acheson" after US Secretary OF State James Acheson (1804-1881). The first post office at "Acheson" reopened on November 12, 1888; it was renamed "Huntington" on December 1st due to local support for the changeover from "Acheson". The population reached its peak during World War II with over 60% being engaged in manufacturing or agriculture; however by 1945 this number had fallen to 30%. In 1950s and 1960s Huntington experienced rapid growth as portions were annexed by other cities including Broad Ripple (1962), Carmel (1963), Fishers (1965), Noblesville (1966), Terre Haute (1968), Evansville (1970) and Lafayette (1972). Huntington is a town in and the county seat of Huntington County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Ohio River just south of Cincinnati. The first settler in what is now Huntington was Nicholas J. Butler who arrived in 1796. The early days of Huntington were difficult with many challenges including lack of water and food. However, over time through hard work, determination and innovation by its citizens, the town grew and prospered. In 1816, a large group of settlers from Kentucky arrived in what is now Huntington and started developing the area into a prestigious community known for its fine architecture, fashionable society and rich history. In 1817, General Andrew Jackson came to power as President of the United States and announced his plan to build an army based on racial equality which would effect all Americans no matter their color or national origin. This new policy called for all black Americans to be deported to Africa where they would be worked until death according to white abolitionist John Brown's theory that slavery was an evil institution that should be abolished worldwide! Many people in Huntington rallied against this plan including Mayor Nicholas Butler who organized a series of peaceful protests culminating with a night march on Washington D.C.. The event had a significant impact on American opinion leading to Jackson's impeachment proceedings four years later which ultimately failed.
