Today, Hobart remains an important industrial and cultural center within Indiana. The history of Hobart begins with John R. HobARTt, who located the town on the banks of the James River in what is now suburban Indianapolis. In 1835, George Washington HobARTt donated land to build a town on which he would live and work. By 1840, over 100 people had moved to new homes in what is now downtown Hobarton. The first stores opened their doors in 1840 and soon after local mills became operational; these included a gristmill built by Samuel Morse that still operates today, as well as three sawmills and two Foundry buildings used by Smith & Wesson revolver manufacture from 1875-1887 However it wasn't until 1851 that railroads arrived in Indianapolis - this event helped spur development around downtown areas including along Canal Street In 1861, following passage of the Civil War Amendments Act (14th Amendment), HoBAurt became one of 14 cities licensed to issue Confederate currency known as "Hobarts". This currency circulated until 1865 when it was replaced by Union money due to anti-Confederate sentiment throughout most of America at this time . After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans were expelled fromIndiana following violent protests organized by white Republicans opposed to their presence Thereafter little black business activity took place outside of Memphis TN until early 20th century when several small businesses reopened due to increased access to transportation

However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Hobart saw significant damage due to the war which forced many residents to flee their homes. As a result of the war and subsequent factors such as economic stagnation and increased competition from other towns in the area, Hobart declined during the late 19th century until it regained some stability during World War II (1939-1945).
