At its peak, The Holland Cafe had over 100 employees and served up breakfast, lunch, dinner and a variety of drinks such as orange juice, milk shake or hot chocolate. In 1954, the owners of The Holland Cafe decided to close their doors for good after more than 50 years of operation. However, they reopened a few weeks later as one of Hobart’s earliest Cafés de la Terre with new ownership and continue serving coffee until this day! Hobart, Indiana is a small town located in the northwest corner of the state of Indiana. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Hobart begins with three men who decided to set up a trade in land that had been purchased by them from a group of Indian traders. The men were James White, Elijah Black, and Daniel Boone. They developed what is now known as White's Corners because they grew corn on their land and sold it to other farmers. Another early settler was John Keyes who came in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the South Canal which became known as Keyesville after him. In 1835, Hobart was platted out when Jett Wesson bought 640 acres (250 hectares) around what is now downtown from John Keyes for $1,000 cash and four horses. Wesson named his tract "Hobart" after his hometown in England where he had moved before becoming a United States citizen in 1826. Wesson also donated some property to the town square which still stands today near Main Street and West State Street. By 1840, Hobart had about 200 residents and six businesses including two stores and one mill that produced flour for local markets until 1865 when it closed due to lack of demand from larger towns in central Indiana or eastern Illinois where wheat prices were much higher than hereabouts. However, during this time period there were also several schools founded in HobARTT (later renamed Elkhart Community Schools). In 1850s-60s there was an agricultural depression due to overproduction caused by advancements made by European countries such as Germany and Russia; however, things began to improve again starting around 1870 with increased demand from Great Britain due to its increasing production capabilities following its victory over Napoleon III at Waterloo thirteen years earlier; however this changed again soon afterwards with BoE’s defeat of Prussia at Tannenberg Field resulting in new world order conditions where Austria took control over Hungary while Russia became more aggressive towards Europe; finally World War I started with Austria-Hungary invading Serbia while Germany wanted revenge for lost WWI battlefield victories across all fronts resulted into war being fought mainly between Austria-Hungary/Germany & Russia; ultimately both sides died with millions dead across Eastern Europe making peace Treaty signed whereby Dual Monarchy dissolved & many Slavic people fled eastward hoping for better lives elsewhere; however these hopes never materialized leaving large numbers behind like many present day residents of HobARTT who continue living among us todayalbeit sometimes scattered among various parts of US mainland notwithstanding recent efforts by government entities thereto make community reunion possible). Hobart, Indiana is a small town in Logan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by John Hobart in 1819 as a settlement on the banks of the White River. When that river broke through its banks and flooded in 1825, Hobart's followers built a dam to prevent further damage and started Canaing woodland for lumber. The town name derives from John's brother-in-law James Canaing (1775-1853). Hobart first became known as an agricultural center when settlers developed corn, wheat, soybeans and other crops there in the 1840s. Manufacturing began with a logging company established here in 1851 that made wooden barrels for local bottling companies. In 1860-61 construction began on what would become Hobart's first schoolhouse; it was completed three years later and served as the town's official library until 1889. In 1865 General Ulysses S Grant visited Lafayette and took an interest in its progress; he recommended that Lafayette incorporation be considered so he could receive financial support from his own government for development projects within the city limits instead of having to rely on private donations which were often insufficiently spent. On July 16, 1865 – two days after Grant delivered his speech – Lafayette incorporated as a city under the name "Hobarton." In 1890–91 work began on enlarging Cumberland High School into what is now called "Purdue University" – one of America's largest high schools when it opened its doors to students in 1896. During World War II Hobart was home to many military families who had their homes turned into barracks or camps throughout Logan County while they were away fighting overseas; since most residents left during peacetime these structures remain standing today as reminders of this time period.
