Hobart is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the seat of Hancock County. The population was 26,915 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The name "Hobart" first appeared on a map in 1814 as part of the territory acquired by Fort Wayne from France duringthe Louisiana Purchase. The first European settler in what became Hobart was Nicholas Flinders, who arrived in 1788 with his family from England. In 1800, John Crouch founded a trading post near present-day Hobart while exploring what would become Marion County. By 1802, all settlers had left for lack of land or other opportunity in central Indiana due to Indian resistance to white settlement and disease outbreaks caused by eastern equine fever (EB). In 1816, General James Wilkinson sent 500 men under Colonel Porter to explore the area around modern day Hobart after hearing about EB from French traders living along the Illinois River Valley. Wilkinson’s party discovered an abandoned Indian village on July 6, 1816 and named it Fort Atkinson after its original occupant, Chief Atakapa of the Potawatomi tribe. A permanent fort was built at Fort Atkinson in 1819 by order of President James Kapp as part of United States military efforts against Native American resistance to white settlement throughout central Indiana during the 1830s and 1840s following reports that some northern Indians were practicing cannibalism and other depredations on their perceived southern rivals – Shawnees and Creeks – leading to fears that they might attack US settlements in our fledgling nation. The fort served as an important military base until it was burned down by elements of local militia forces led by Major General Andrew Jackson on February 3, 1857 during his campaign against Native American resistance at Wabash River crossings just south of present-day Lafayette Hills suburbs northeast of downtown Indianapolis – one day before he would lead Ulysses S Grant's Union army into battle at Gettysburg Bridge over nearby Monon Creek) . 1 million people visit Hobart annually; many travel here for its vibrant arts scene which includes both visual art exhibitions and music festivals; its beautiful lakeside communities such as Mansfield, Terre Haute and Clear Lake; its world-renowned educational institutions including Purdue University; its plentiful natural resources such as coal mining operations dating back to pre-Industrial times;and especially its excellent restaurants which attract locals and visitors alike from across America
