The history of the Coast Guard in Hobart, Indiana goes back to 1879. The first coast guard station in Hobart was built on the banks of the Maumee River. In 1892, a new station was built on Third Street east of State Road 6. The present day Coast Guard Station at 201 N 2nd St is used for both law enforcement and emergency purposes. In 1915, the first helicopter operated by the Coast Guard was purchased from Curtiss-Wright Corporation. This helicopter served as a backup for the search and rescue service until 1922 when a more modern helicopter was procured from Boeing Aircraft Company. With this new technology, Search and Rescue Services were able to respond quickly to 999 calls even in difficult situations. As time went on, helicopters became an important tool for the Coast Guard in Hobart. In 1984, a Sikorsky SH-3H Sea King Helicopter replaced the aging CH-2A Comet Helicopter which had been used since 1975. This helicopter is used for coastal patrols and provides support during disasters such as hurricanes or floods. Hobart, Indiana is a small town located in central Indiana. The population was 9,688 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Howard County and its sole incorporated municipality. The first permanent settler in Hobart was Aaron Burr, who founded a trading post on the site of present-day downtown in 1795. In 1814, James Kapp arrived from Illinois to make his fortune as a speculator in Indian land deals. He and his friends built Kapp House, one of the most notable structures in town. Hobart slowly grew into an important center for commerce and culture during the 19th century. The arrival ofrailroads made it possible to ship goods more quickly and easily to cities such as Chicago and St Louis. This led to increased business opportunities for Hobart merchants and artisans. In addition, hobart became home to several colleges and universities during this time: Purdue University (1860), Central High School (1881), Hobart College (1901), George Washington University (1904) and Lafayette College (1928). During World War II, HobART served as an auxiliary air force base for the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force under Major General Curtis LeMay. The airport played an important role in supporting Allied Operation Overlord by providing landing sites for fighter planes carrying supplies to allied forces fighting on European soil. In recent years, HobART has regained some of its former glory as a major tourist destination with attractions like the restored old city hall building and the John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum inside the current courthouse complex adjacent to downtown.
