Highland is bordered by the towns of Bedford and Brookfield to the east, Mechanicsville to the south, and Noblesville to the west. The town has a total area of 2.4 square miles. The first settlement in Highland was made on July 31, 1810 by John Ross and his brother Andrew. They named their new community after Malcolm MacDonald of Ayrshire in Scotland who had come down for a visit several years earlier. In 1815, Alexander Campbell came to Highlands from Michigan with his family and began developing the land around what is now Highland Park. He renamed it Highland after himself and developed a large farm which he used as a wintering ground for troops during the American Civil War. In 1865, when Knowlton decided to move away from Highland and join forces with Fort Wayne in order to block Fort Harrison's access to trade routes on the Ohio River, he established his own stockade on what is now Green road near present day Green Road intersection (Old Highway 4). In 1885-86 James Hickey ran an Improvement Company that built roads and other improvements throughout much of West Plains Township including parts of today's Highlandtown section of Bedford Township along with part of today's Brookfield Township Undertaker Daniel Kapp also operated a blacksmith shop adjacent to current day High School until its closure in 1974 due primarily to health concerns related thereto However general store operation continued until at least 1916 when shops were moved into new buildings on Main Street near present day Middle School
