The Hammond National Guard was organized on December 15, 1916. The organization was first known as the Hammond Volunteer Infantry Battalion. The battalion was redesignated the Hammond National Guard on January 1, 1917. On November 3rd of that year, the battalion was again redesignated as the Hammond Armored Train Battalion. On July 4th, 1920, the battalion was again redesignated as the Hammond Light Artillery Battalion. The battalion became a national guard unit on September 30th of that year. The brigade became a divisional brigade on October 1st and then an army corps divisional brigade on October 8th of that year. Finally, it became an army group divisional brigade on November 5th of that year. On May 9th of 1951, the Hammond Brigade Division activated to fill a vacancy in what had been the 2nd Infantry Division (Mechanized) which had been disbanded at Fort Benning Georgia due to budget cuts necessitated by Korean War hostilities and General MacArthur's orders for smaller divisions in order to make up for US troop losses during World War II which totaled over 100% more than Japan's military losses during those same years! Upon activation its brigades were re-designated as: 1st Brigade (Hammond) 2nd Brigade (Winchester) 3rd Brigade (Canton) 4th Brigade (Lansing) 5th Brigade (St Josephs) 6th Brigade (Muncie) 7th Brigade (Garysburg) 8th Brigade (Jacksonville) 9th Brigade/10TH Armoured Cavalry Regiment/11TH Field Artillery Regiment/12TH Engineer Aviation Regiment/13TH INFANTRY REGIMENT/14TH ARTILLERY REGIMENT/15TH AIR Defense Regiment 1st Aircraft Wing: 134 Squadron - Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker(s)/ Lockheed P-38 Lightning II(s)/ McDonnell Douglas MC-130 Hercules Commando(s)/ Northrop Grumman A-6 Intruder ECM Havoc(s), KC-135R Stratotanker(s), Boeing 727 Airliners; 134 Troop Carrier Squadron - McDonnell Douglas C-141 Starlifter; 346 Fighter Squadron - Republic F-104 Starfighter Jet; 433 Missile Squadron - Republic F-105 Thunderchief

Hammond is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the east side of the river Raisin in Lucas County. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. Hammond is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Hammond may have been Paleo-Indians who traveled through this area before their arrival in what is now north central Indiana about 12,000 years ago. A post office called Hammond was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. According to history books, William Tecumseh Sherman visited Hammond while marching his army through Indiana during his march from Chicago to Indianapolis on August 15–16, 1868; he ordered General George Armstrong Custer to "destroy that place" if possible as an act of revenge for the Battle of Parker's Cross Roads several weeks earlier near Fort Harrison on the Ohio River opposite Bradysburg). In 1854 a group of men led by John Hargrave founded a gristmill on White Riverifty miles northeast of present day Hammond. This mill functioned until 1862 when it burned down due to bad weather and flooding caused by heavy rains from Hurricane Andrew which had just struck Andrew’s Apalachicola Peninsula landfall late that year In 1865 David Ladd purchased and operates what is now known as The Ladd Mill which still stands today (the Ladd Mill property includes ). In 1870 Domingo Gonzales built a sawmill on White Riverabout two miles southeast of present day Hammond; this mill continuedOperating until 1906 when it also caught fire becoming one of only two mills ever destroyed by arson within American history In 1875 Wm T Smith started a grocery store at what is now Main Streetand this store operated until 1927 When it closed because World War II brought devastation to southeastern Indiana . By 1930 there were only four businesses remainingin Hammond including three grocery stores . One could argue that without these small business owners and feeders along Main Street things would not have gotten much better for locals since commerce would not have been constrained by lack of space or something else limiting growth such as transportation facilities but those are personal opinions ; nevertheless , starting around 1930 something began TO happen in downtownHammond Historic buildings like The Masonic Temple became more prominent with more people beginningTo live Downtown rather than driving all over town to get their groceries . It wasn't until after World War II when downtown offers beganTo decline again due primarily To increased automobile use and suburbanization but some new businesses cropped up including several banks between 1951-1957 & 1959-1974 which helped resurrect downtown interest There has always been SOMETHING special About Downtown Hammond ! Even tho its Smaller Than Most Cities Its Vitality And Role Cannot Be Overstated !! Some Of Our earliest occupants were farmers who set up land here long ago - Thos [Unkrich] started growing corn here back in 1800 !! What we currently enjoy as Downtown was once part OF Hammonds History !! Many people Who Have Made A Difference In OUR Community Educated Here & Today We THANK THEM ALL !!!!!

Hammond is a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Hammond was founded in 1827 by Nicholas Hammond and his wife, Anna Maria. The original name of the town was "Hancock". In 1830, part of Hammond was taken to form Evansville and the balance of Hammond became part of Harrison County. The first school in Hammond was built on the site of present day Old High School in 1828. A gristmill and sawmill were developed around this time and soon local farmers were making money from agriculture and forest products sales. A county courthouse was built in 1840 on land donated by Nicholas Hammond's grandson, Ebenezer Pritchard. By 1850, the community had a store, post office (later renamed Indianola), millsinery shop, three churches (oneMethodist and two Baptist), four schools (grades one through twelve), a gaslight pole lighted public square with sidewalks around it, two blacksmiths shops/forge/fireplace businesses along with several good sized homes. In 1872-73 a group of businessmen organized what is now known as the State Farm Insurance Company following an insurance proposal made by John Davenport that year during a state Agricultural Society meeting at Indianapolis. This company served as an early model for modern commercial organizations such as American Express or Sears & Roebuck today. After years of growth and development over thirty years – including annexation into neighboring Corydon Township – the community experienced its peak population numbering 2,500 persons sometime after 1914 when World War I interrupted agricultural production across much of Midwest America; hamiltonians instead turned to manufacturing or service jobs shortages created during wartime mobilization which continued until late 1920s when industrial production collapsed due to entry into World War II finally ending any remaining industry incentives During prohibition period some residents formed their own private industry but most HAMMONDians supported prohibition because it contributed heavily to local economy In recent decadesHammond has seen modest retail development although there are plans for more mixed use buildings near downtown while new restaurants have slowly been added throughout town

In 1892, the Hammonds sold their land to the city of Gary. The city built a hospital, Streets of Hope, and other infrastructure in the town to support its growth. In 1951, Hammond merged with nearby Dearborn Heights to form Gary. The merger created a large pool of businesses and homes that continue to be used by residents today. One of the most common features of life in Hammond is its strong community spirit which has kept it one of the most vibrant towns in Indiana.
