From then on espresso became associated with Italy due both to its historical ties with Italy and its role as one of the few countries where strong black coffee could still be enjoyed without having it diluted by weakweaken Americanixtures such as Dutch Schultz's Koffiekamer brand . Italian soldiers often brought back surplus quantities while abroad so café owners could sell duty free goods made from Italian-roasted beans until World War II when most cafes switched over to instant extracted java

Hammond is a small town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,234 at the 2000 census. Hammond was founded in 1824 by Captain John Hammond. It is named after General James H. Hammond who fought in the War of 1812 and later served as governor of Indiana. Hammond is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Hammond was John Hammond, captain of the "John Adams" which arrived on December 4, 1824. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now US-21 north of present-day Hammond. The first store opened in 1830 on eastbank of the current state highway (US-21) about two miles northeast of present day US-21 and three miles southwest of where it crosses CR 5471 (now State Road 7). The first post office was established at Ironton on November 25, 1830, and continued operation until it closed on October 15th, 1840; it had been open for six months at that time due to Indian hostilities against American settlers along the frontier In 1836 Captain John Hammond married Mary mettlesworth who came from Middletown Township, Kosciusko County to live with him near Ironton. They had five children: William (1837-1911), Charles (1839-1914), Sarah Jane (1841-1927), Jesse Cramer(1843 - 1924)and Anna Augusta(1845 - 1928). One grandson died young while serving in World War I; another grandson entered business administration after leaving college Captain John Hamond's son James H., settled at Uptown Township next door to Captain John's home around 1840 when he married Eliza Wightman there also from Middletown Township . They had four children: Jesse WightmanHammond born 1842/3 – 1861 Harvest Home place; Emma Jane Ramsey 1870–71 – Mayflower Emporium Place & died suddenly unmarried 1901; James Hampton 1863–4 – 1865 Greenlawn Arsenal; Harry Emerson 1865–6 – Vestal Villa & died suddenly unmarried 1898 As early as 1840 many other families were living near or within walking distance of Uptown Township where new stores appeared such as those operated by Elijah Morse Sr.(a blacksmith) located just down Slaughter Street from Captains house sometime before that date European missionary George White visited this area during winter 1850s making an impact on local culture A schoolhouse was built adjacent to First Baptist Church between 1830s and 1860 A gristmill dating back to 1798 also stands today across country road next to old cemetery Some aspects still remembered today include Mrs Hamond’s recipe for “Mashed Potatoes” still being enjoyed by residents some 60 years later
