Griffith, Indiana has a rich history of National Guard service. The Griffith National Guard Post was organized on July 3, 1892 as the first military unit in the county. The post served until 1946 when it was amalgamated into the present-day Indiana Army National Guard. The Griffith National Guard Museum is located in downtown Griffith and preserves the history of the Griffin National Guard Post and its predecessor units. The National Guard was first called to duty in Griffith, Indiana on December 9, 1866. The 8th Infantry Regiment of the Union Army had been sent from Indianapolis to help put down a Civil War-era insurrection. When the regiment arrived, it was joined by the 3rd Indiana Volunteer Cavalry and these forces were quickly assembled into a battalion, numbered 1st Indiana Cavalry Battalion. On January 17, 1867,1st Indiana Cavalry Battalion was redesignated as Company A of 2nd Regiment United States Infantry (7th Brigade). On March 4, 1867 2nd Regiment United States Infantry became part of 7th Brigade under command of Major General George Meade. In 1870 Company A transferred to 3rd Regiment United States Infantry and again redesignated as Company A2. In 1871 Company A2 transferred to 10th Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry and also redesignated as Company A3. In 1874 Company A3 transferred to 11th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry and also redesignated as Company A4. In 1880 company ‘A’4 withdrew from service and reorganized as Battery D2/6 US Artillery Corps in Indianapolis under command of Captain John Fenton Hinson
Griffith is a small town located in the eastern part of Indiana, approximately 25 miles east of Evansville. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. Griffith is named after General George Griffith, who fought in the American Civil War and was awarded the Medal of Honor. Griffith was founded in 1853 by pioneer settlers John and Sarah Griggs. It began as a small farming community with just a few families living on one-acre plots. By 1870, Griffith had developed into a small town with a population of over 100 people. In 1925, when Indiana became an open-air amusement park, Griffith became its central city. Today, Griffith remains an important center for culture and commerce in eastern Indiana. The most significant event to occur in Griffith during its history occurred on October 15, 1907 when local businessmen formed the Griffey Manufacturing Company to produce bicycles for use by farmers and other early commuters travelling to Evansville for work or shopping. The company continued operation until it closed its doors in 1966 due to lack of demand from customers. Today, many businesses operate within the limits of both Griffey Village and downtown Griffin: retail stores such as Walmart and Kmart; restaurants like Subway and Papa John’s Pizza; processing plants such as Cargill Inc.; office buildings such as Oneida National Bank; and homes including The Griggs Mansion which has been used as a movie set throughout accidents that have taken place near Interstate 65 near Townsend County Airport (now known as Eastern Air Lines)
