Griffith, Indiana is located in the Eastern Panhandle of Illinois and has a rich military history dating back to the Revolutionary War. The city was named for General George Griffith, who fought in the war and was given an estate in the town by Marquis de Lafayette. In 1832, Griffith became the seat of Crawford County, Indiana and chose it as its capital. In 1835, he founded the University of Indianapolis. The Military Academy of West Point was founded nearby in 1836 and also adopted Griffith's name. The Griffith Museum of Art has a military deployed gift history dating back to World War I. The museum acquired an American Infantry trench coat from the soldiers who fought in that war. In 1939, the museum began displaying World War II memorabilia, including uniforms and insignias. In 1951, the museum acquired a Japanese Wartime Doll from Japan. Griffith was born on October 12, 1802, in County Mayo, Ireland. He emigrated to United States in 1827 and became an American citizen. Griffith operated a wagon-driving business and built his first home on the banks of the White River. In 1840, he married Sarah Elizabeth Smart. The couple founded the city of Indianapolis with their initial land grant of 640 acres (2 km2). Griffith served as Mayor of Indianapolis from 1865 to 1870 and as Governor of Indiana from 1870 to 1876.
