Griffith is a small town in Fayette County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Griffith metropolitan area. Griffith is named after Griffith J. Henschel, an early settler and a member of the first city council in the community. The town was founded in 1827 by George Washington Stephenson and others as a stop on the Road to Fort Wayne. It grew rapidly during the 1830s when entrepreneurs established gristmills, sawmills, and other businesses here. By 1840 Griffith had become one of five towns in this region that becamethe "Fayette Township" of Indiana Territory under territorial governor Simon Cameron. In 1845, when Indianapolis arrived and supplanted Griffith as the regional center, Griffith lost its status but preserved its name as an independent village until it merged with Indianapolis on January 1, 1907. In 1930 local officials proposed developing Griffith into a major water supply and industrial center due to its location within easy access of Lake Erie via two short miles of Interstate 65; however this proposal was not picked up because of heavy opposition from residents who claimed that their town would be destroyed if developed (a claim which turned out to be true). In recent years some efforts have been made to redevelop or preserve Griffith while also creating new opportunities for economic growth in nearby communities such as Terre Haute and Lafayette along I-65 corridor
